4-Star Defenseman Chris Baird-Gajdos Earning Every Shift With Capitols

Chris Baird-Gajdos still remembers the exact moment the game sped up on him.

A 4-star recruit and a second-round selection in the 2024 USHL Phase I Draft, the young defenseman was confident in his abilities when he arrived to join the Madison Capitols late in the 2024-25 season. However, he quickly realized his belief would be tested against a locker room full of highly-touted NHL Draft prospects.

The reality check came when the puck found the stick of Ryker Lee.

“It was actually in practice,” Baird-Gajdos told PuckPreps of his ‘Welcome to the USHL’ moment. “It was when I came here last year. It was my first or second practice. Ryker Lee walked out and just absolutely dangled me and sniped.”

The play lasted only seconds, but the impression was permanent.

“That was when I realized that I was dealing with a different breed of forwards,” he said.

That learning moment set the bar, illustrating the skill required to earn a role in Madison. Fast forward to today, and Baird-Gajdos is in the middle of his first full USHL season. Through 39 games, he has notched three goals and 11 points while carving out steady minutes on one of the league’s deepest defensive corps.

His journey to the mid-season grind began last year while splitting time between Salisbury Prep School and the Northern CT Nor’Easters 18U team. The jump from prep hockey to the junior ranks is a massive step up. The pace is relentless, and a single lapse in concentration can be fatal.

“You can’t take off any shifts in the USHL,” he said. “You could be having a great game for the first 40 minutes of play. And then one mistake or one shift off and all of a sudden if you give a lot of these USHL guys time and space and give them an opportunity, a lot of the times they’re going to capitalize.”

Baird-Gajdos got his first taste of game action in November 2024.

He logged 17 minutes in his USHL debut and proved he could compete at this level. After that brief stint, he returned to finish his prep season before rejoining Madison for the final six weeks of the year. Though he didn’t see more game action then, the time spent traveling as an extra defenseman and participating in practice was invaluable.

“That kind of exposed me a little more to the travel routines and stuff like that,” he said. “It kind of helped me hit the ground running a little bit more. And it wasn’t as much of an adjustment.”

Returning for the start of this season, he was one of the youngest players on the roster and the only defenseman without significant junior experience. He knew the depth chart was crowded.

“They didn’t promise me a specific role or anything,” he said of his preseason discussions with the staff. “It was more just like, ‘You’re going to have to work for everything you’re going to get.’

That hard work is paying off.

Madison’s coaching staff has noted significant growth in the defenseman’s two-way game, particularly his ability to navigate traffic and find shooting lanes.

“Chris has had some offensive success this year with his ability to shoot from the blue line,” Capitols head coach and general manager Andy Brandy told PuckPreps. “He works with Coach (Tom) Gilbert daily on his blue line work.

“He has a willingness to play physical and he’s not afraid of contact. Chris has adjusted to the speed of this league and continues to learn how to defend with his stick and how to read through layers.”

Beyond the scoresheet, Baird-Gajdos has earned a regular shift on the penalty kill, a role that demands high-level situational awareness.

“We’ve got a great penalty kill and we spend a lot of time on it,” he said. “There’s a lot of different cues and things you have to be thinking about. If you’re not in your spot or you’re a second in the wrong lane, [the puck] could end up in the back of the net. We all take a ton of pride in being able to be an option whenever we need a penalty kill.”

As the regular season winds down and Madison pushes toward the postseason, Baird-Gajdos is focused on refining the details. From his defensive reliability to his physical presence, every practice is now preparation for the high-stakes intensity of playoff hockey.

And with that comes the growth and development needed to set him up for even greater success next season.
