Projectable Skills: Wrist shot, Soft Hands, Good Vision Development Opportunities: Lateral explosion, Initial acceleration
I feel like he could be one of the breakaway specialists from the 2007 group. If you give him any time and space off the rush to be able to attack the goaltender one-on-one, you will lose that battle. His hands are very slick, balance is great in motion to receive passes, stickhandle laterally, and use a multitude of moves to attack. His shot can be sneaky too. He looks for well-placed attacks when he finds those opportunities. Savin seems to move with a stronger core strength, maintains power in his glide but does sometimes lack some explosion from a stand still. When in motion though, he can drive the net, adjust his balance while spinning and protecting the puck, and preemptively stick lift players who are trying to cover him. Most of his success comes from some sharper turns, and ability to control the puck while at tempo and pace. I’d work on some slight adjustments to his skating stride to have a little less heel kick and find a deeper knee bend in most situations. Savin’s potential will be unlocked in how often he can stay in motion because that’s when he’s creating separation and using his skill. He also just has an incredibly accurate wrist shot.

2023 Canada Winter Games Report: Team BC (12) vs Team Nova Scotia (2)
Though his creativity and small-ice detail was not on the same level as some of his teammates, Savin Virk’s big-ice game perfectly complemented the detailed elements of his linemates. With continuous explosive and exaggerated strides as well as crossovers Virk was able to clear an excessive amount of open and moderately congested ice while carrying the puck before shifting direction abruptly and initiating a cycle effort. He demonstrated strong chemistry and awareness of the moment to kickstart his speed for transition success, generating momentum by dipping low in support, then eating up the white space before Nova Scotia had any opportunity to recalculate their defensive assignments. He supported this type of attack with a long reach, which in other circumstances I may criticize for exposing the puck too much. In this game, however, his combination of speed and puck handing tactics were entirely fit for purpose. As expected, he also used his speed very well on the forecheck, applying relentless F1 pressure to the puck carrier, while also anticipating the flow of play to double as an F2 in some cases. His puck recovery rate was quite high considering his narrow window of opportunity to react to loose pucks. Overall his ability to play with such pace, while mitigating most of the warts that often come with unyielding speed was very impressive.

2022 World Youth Championship Quarter Finals: MW Prime (7) vs Western Canada Prime (2)
Savin Virk picked up 1 assist in the loss as he set up Jack Kachowski on the powerplay with a nice pass through the slot, passing 2 MW Prime defenders enroute to reaching Kachowski’s blade. He attempted several similar passes through the game and was successful on the majority of them. He’s a very strong playmaker with soft hands a good understanding of where his teammates will be and how to open up passing lanes to create chances. He had some good shooting looks as well, getting pucks on net that challenged the goalie, showing off a good wrist shot.

2022 World Youth Championships: Western Selects (4) vs Western Canada Prime (2)
Savin Virk was the little-thing-king in this one for Western Canada. He made some nice passes in the offensive zone, reading off his teammates well he went to the proper areas of the ice to create space and draw defenders’ attention towards him, giving his teammates more space to work with. A hard worker in the corners he retrieved pucks and forced turnovers in both the offensive and defensive ends. He knocked down some passes with good hand-eye coordination and quickly formed a counterattack as a result.

2007 WSI Elite Semi Final: Draft Day Black vs Pro Hockey
Savin Virk scored the game’s first goal with a nice move in close on the goalie. His quick hands translated all over the game, making some nice moves off the rush he was strong in offensive transition at creating space. The speed and tenacity in the offensive zone positioned him where he needed to be successful, attacking the dirty areas of the ice he was a “water bug” type of player for Pro Hockey.

2007 WSI Elite: Minnesota Fire vs Pro Hockey
Playing a couple games at the u17 level for the Yale Hockey Academy, Savin Virk is another player for Pro Hockey who seems very comfortable playing with his peer group at the u15 level. His playmaking game was very strong in the match, scanning the ice well, buying time and space, and of course connecting on passes made him a valuable piece to creating offense. He can manipulate the passing lanes by changing his hand positioning on his stick, by extending and retracting his stick he does a great job at protecting the puck as he looks around to create new passing lanes.
