There were a few reasons Vandenberg landed as Myers' MVP, the first being his ability to win back possession of the puck. He was so impactful at freeing up pucks, winning battles, and overall just finding ways to force turnovers. Thomas is incredibly strong on pucks and a powerful skater, making for an effective combination to be a nightmare for his opponents. Whether it was on the forecheck, breaking up plays in the neutral zone, or defending in his end, Vandenberg consistently denied time and space from his opponents to win back possession. The second area he impressed was his ability to control the puck, whether in transition or along the exterior of the offensive zone. He was always the one commanding the puck in transition, entering the offensive zone with control, and setting up the attack. Within the offensive zone, he once again dominated off the cycle, being so effective at fending off pressure, and finding ways to get the puck to the middle of the ice. Everything he did was about controlling the puck, using his powerful and balanced stance to protect it, and attacking the goal from these cycle and half-wall situations. He tallied an impressive goal through one of these exact sequences, moving off the wall toward the net and blasting one short side high by the netminder. It's been an impressive season from Thomas, impressing in almost every viewing and he once again performed well over the OHL Cup, inching his way closer and closer to my first round.
