I haven’t really talked about him from this sort of perspective yet but for the 2021 WHL Draft I felt like Tij Iginla was somewhere in that 5-8 realm as far as talent for the draft. It was really close. The whole talk at the time was that maybe there were only a handful of teams that Tij could potentially go to. I haven’t really heard much chatter about this for Joe but I’m sure the same kind of situation exists. I think Joe is in that same kind of ballpark as far as where he should be considered in the draft because he’s so ridiculously well rounded. He can make some one on one drag moves in tight spaces that get you out of your seat and his shot has pinpoint accuracy. I think most of the players in the top-10 have an aspect to their game that I’d rank at A+. I don’t think Joe necessarily has any particular A+ quality but oh boy is he an A in a wide range of qualities.

Here you have one of the most tactically diverse players in the Western U15 leagues. On any given play, you never know how he is going to attack the net but I can guarantee you that he will. Joe has the ability to toe drag, stutter step, shift his weight, apply give-and-gos in transition, poke pucks free, gather loose pucks, spin off coverage, and constantly adapt with quick processing and magnet puck control. He isn’t the type of player who will burn you for four breakaway goals a game. He’s the kind of player who you’re left shaking your head at each different highlight and watching it in slow motion to see exactly what happened. Just this weekend, he scored with a rocket top corner from distance in stride, a turn and fire in the slot, a relentless attack on the net where he dragged to his backhand in traffic, and a one on one move where he pulled the puck behind his hip pocket and used a chip shot just over the pads. The projectability of his success at the WHL level should be from the understanding that if you try and eliminate one of his tools he will just use a different tool next time.

When you are an Iginla, there are some things which just should be assumed and obvious. Joe falls in line with the hockey family when it comes to his work ethic, his spacing and situational hockey IQ, and the details to his game which pay off dividends at this level. You’ll find him hustling on a backcheck, applying good angles and pressure on the forecheck, and using his quick edges to adjust to those angles well. He often has his head on a swivel, is cognizant of moving wide for exit options or supporting pucks in other situations by closing gaps. While he usually wasn’t a prime puck handler or first option for Kelowna due to their talent on the roster, Joe was doing everything right in a supportive role by his positional adjustments and presenting his stick at all times with open posture. He found his opportunities off the rush though to show his composure and a little bit of creativity. There are still some little adjustments to his skating stride he can improve on to get a bit more extension and power as well moving forward. Other than that, I’m excited to see him this season in an expanded role and with longer puck touches.

I have not loved Iginla in this tournament so far, but he definitely had his best performance in this game after the coaching decision to move him up onto the Ruck line. When he’s at his best he shows excellent stick control and a quick release on his shot that is tough for goalies to read. My concern with his game is that he runs a bit hot and cold. There are some nice moments like his clever chip off the boards under pressure to spring a 2 on 1, and some frustrating moments and turnovers. He was mostly on the positive side of the ledger in this game, but I think he has the tools to be an even more consistent offensive threat.
