Markus is your prototypical standout from events like these. Every time you notice him, he’s in alone somewhere. Ruck just has an innate ability to find space and get lost in coverages and has the skills to do serious damage when uncontested. Literally every time I noticed him do something great, he came out of nowhere to create the opportunity, and when you watch the tape back afterwards, he’s just one of those players that has the puck find him routinely.

The line of Adam Valentini and the Ruck twins was the top line for Canada in this contest, dominating every shift in the offensive third and combining for four of their eight goals. All three players on this line played a unique role, creating a unit that just clicked. Markus' contributions to this line were made by his passing. He always knew where his linemates were on the ice, especially his brother Liam. Given this understanding of where his teammates were, the puck would be on Markus' stick for a split second and boom, he'd thread a puck to his brother in the slot area for grade-A scoring chances. Markus registered two assists through these passing sequences, with primary assists on two of his brother's three goals.

The Ruck brothers were yet again the only real source of offence for BC and I thought Markus especially was really adept at finding ways to open up the Saskatchewan defensive structure with tape to tape and cross ice passes across coverage. He also utilized his trademark small area, one touch, give and go’s to really slow the pace down, buy time and space, and get the defence stationary. His assist in this game was a thing of beauty as he fed the puck into the perfect spot for his brother to tip it in while actively falling. He is going to put up big points at every level as there is no greater weapon than being able to properly use your teammates.

Ruck is one of the best passers in this age group and his chemistry with his twin brother Liam brings up obvious comparisons with the Sedin twins. What I find so impressive is just the volume of passes that Markus makes in a game. He uses small area passes like other players use stickhandles. There was a rush in this game where the two Rucks attacked 2-on-3 from their own blueline, they skated within five feet of each other all the way down the ice making small touch passes every time a defender tried to close on them, and the seas ultimately parted for a scoring opportunity. Defenceman just don’t know how to handle the timing and spacing they generate. Markus is usually the one to make the final pass as he seems to relish setting his linemates up. Despite his proclivity to pass he has a really solid shot as well and will unleash it every so often to keep defences and the goaltender honest.
