Sivertson was the highest scoring ’08 born player at this event collecting eight goals and 12 points in five games. He started the tournament off with a massive five-point night and continued to ride that momentum throughout. The first thing that stands out with Sivertson is his size and strength. He is already well developed and ahead of most of his peers physically. He uses his frame effectively to protect the puck, wear down defences down low, and muscle his way interior. While Sivertson understands his physical advantage and uses it effectively, he is not mindless or over-reliant on his size to create. He shows deftness and finesse with his hands, especially around the net front where he collects rebounds effectively and repositions to get his shot off quickly. He also sees the ice well making rapid decisions before defenders have a chance to react. He works the puck low to high consistently, using his frame to protect, keeping his head up and working against the grain to pinching players behind coverage. Sivertsons combination of size, vision, and skill should project very well to higher levels but he needs to ensure his feet do not become a limiting factor. His posture is still far too upright, and his balance fails him at times. When he bears down along the wall, he’s tough to move but in open ice he can be a little too easy to push off the puck.

In the games I watched, it was a mixture of an event for Jonah. He’s the scoring leader in the SAAHL U15 so certainly the expectations were high that he would consistently produce. I think I’d best describe Jonah as aggressive and confident. He’s the kind of player who always wants the puck on his stick and shows it by how he carries himself on the ice with or without the puck. You’ll find him powering into lanes, using his reach side to side especially in motion off zone entries against defenders one-on-one, and following up his shot trying to bury loose rebounds. As productive of a player as he is already, he still has room to grow with his footwork, explosiveness, and keeping his head up in certain moments to not lose passing/shot vision. How much he can improve those elements will determine how easy transition to U18 or beyond will be.

Regina experienced for the first time this season two losses in a row. Then that continued to three losses in a row in Round Robin. The top team from the Saskatchewan South division got a little bit of a wake up call as far as how good the top teams from other leagues are around Western Canada. Jonah’s best elements to his game are his size, shot power, and how he uses his reach laterally to drag pucks side to side in small windows to create shooting space. He continued to do this during the tournament and I can tell it makes scouts dream of what kind of player he will be in 3 years. Currently though, he wasn’t able to make as much happen against other top teams due to the pacing of his skating being a little behind theirs. He certainly still found moments off the rush and on the PP but it wasn’t until the final games against Greater Vancouver and OHA Colorado where his strength and pacing had enough space to be as dangerous as he can be with his heavy shot. I bet if I polled scouts, he’s probably the player who would have the widest range of projections.

That Regina Monarchs team really is something to watch, honestly. They have four players specifically off the bat who deserve their own breakdown to isolate what they bring to the table. Jonah is currently the most productive member of the bunch and certainly brings size, a hard wrist shot, and the ability to drag laterally and cut back into the middle of the ice off the rush. This update on him is not to say I’ve figured out exactly what he is capable of or where he should be ranked. I think this upcoming weekend will be a great test of team chemistry against some of the best competition across Western Canada. He’s also a later birthday and looks to be still improving some of his acceleration and quick changes of pace. In this draft, he is a player who can certainly protect the puck on the exterior and still find a passing outlet which helps continue dangerous chances in the offensive zone once play is established.

Sivertson is such an interesting player to evaluate as he has so many translatable tools from his size and strength, playmaking, shot, and overall awareness but his skating is in really rough shape. This specific game was however a showcase of everything good that he brings to the table. He really reads the play well and understands his responsibility. His goal was a perfect example as he read the positioning of his linemates and the defence on a 3-on-2, readjusted himself perfectly behind the puck carrier, and when it was dropped back to him, he ripped it into the top corner. He also shows soft touch in tight spaces and an ability to make quick one touch passes out of traffic. He was used to great effect at the bumper position on the powerplay as a node to filter pucks into.

He was slipping into space as a trailer on many plays while his teammates found him for slot chances. Jonah still has a bit of catching up to do pace wise with his body as his feet come across quite heavy in certain moments but it all does not preclude him from being involved, making end to end rushes, and using his reach to dangle players one on one. He was able to find that rush space to go forehand to backhand and try to elevate it over the outstretched pads.
