Brody Berard has consistently demonstrated his ability to make the most of his size and mobility in defensive situations to overpower puck carriers. He showed off strong skating in all directions, both in speed and agility, he managed gaps well and gave up very little ice when handling defensive transitions. With a rangy stick coupled with his ability to gap-up on puck carriers and cut down space, he was able to interrupt several plays through the neutral zone, along with plays just inside his defensive blueline. There was very little in the way of high-danger chances from the middle of the ice when Berard was present, swatting away centering passes and getting in the way shots, he did a great job in his own defensive zone, and on the defensive side of the puck. He also had shown great consistency handling the puck himself, he won’t make any high-end flashy plays, but upon exiting his defensive end he was remarkably consistent at making that simple and effective first pass to the open man. His quickness when handling the puck had also opened a bit of space for him high in the offensive zone to get some shots on net, assisting in generating chances around the goalmouth to some degree.

Berard took some time to find his rhythm, but by the end of the tournament, I was thoroughly impressed with his all-around play. He showcased his physicality in a smart manner, choosing not to throw reckless hits but instead effectively using his size to push opponents off the puck and win battles along the boards. In the offensive zone, he demonstrated a powerful wrist shot that was capable of cutting through traffic with precision. There were several instances where he confidently walked the blue line and fired shots on net, often resulting in teammates getting their sticks on the puck for effective deflections. Berard also displayed a willingness to carry the puck into the offensive zone himself; his skating ability and strength made it difficult for opposing teams to slow him down. While he may not have been the fastest defenseman on the ice, he compensated with physicality and was relied upon heavily in all situations throughout the tournament. His ability to impose his presence made him a key player for his team, showcasing his reliability in both defensive and offensive scenarios.

I thought Brody Berard was a calming presence on the back end, his passing ability led to simple breakouts for Team Purple and he was able to get his team up the ice effectively. He showcased a wide passing range of short concise passes, and long stretch passes to keep the play moving. His hand-eye coordination in the defensive zone helped him settle loose pucks and defuse some dicey situations, and he did well to find time and space to regroup and work on getting the puck out of the defensive zone safely.

Coming away as a champion apart of the Mount St. Charles team at the USA Hockey Nationals 14U Division, Brody Berard did a great job at using his size, mobility, and overall strong defensive IQ to break up plays both in transition along with in the defensive end, as well as contribute offensively here-and-there with some safe plays. 1-on-1 in defensive situations he’s quite formidable, some great size mixed with lateral mobility that allows him to step up on puck carriers, cut off angles, and smother opponents along the wall. He forced opponents wide time-and-time again, eliminating any threat through the middle, and seemingly always being in the right spot positionally. His soft hands when handling the puck made him strong at exiting the zone and walking the blueline; when pressured by opponents he could calmly move the puck and skate his way out of trouble simultaneously whether it be on the breakout or in the offensive zone.

Brody Berard continued to impress on the offensive side of the puck for his squad, demonstrating an elite ability to quarterback the powerplay, walking the line with tremendous poise, pace and creativity. His footwork and ability to adapt to pressure, change direction and protect the puck with little space to work with before shooting off a pass and opening up ice in other areas of the zone showed excellent patience. So much of what the Jr. Mounties did on the powerplay ran through his stick, pulling in defenders and getting around them with fluid footwork and a lengthy reach. He made plenty of effective passes with his head-up to generate scoring chances. He picked up an assist on the 6-2 goal as one of his many shots from the line generated a rebound chance that was deposited by a teammate nearby the goal. The development of offensive dominance, and offensive IQ from Berard has been great to see, taking a great step in his development to round out his 200-foot play, remaining strong on the defensive side of the puck and risk-adverse, he consistently made the right play along with flashed instances of high-end ability.

Brody Berard played a strong, physical game with a high level of intensity that helped encourage counterattacks and stifling opponents in the process. Early in the game he laid a thunderous hit along the boards to deny a controlled zone entry. His physical game is certainly in the upper echelon amongst his peers and time and time again we saw him win battles and connect on bodychecks that forced the puck off an opponents stick. He allowed very little time and space off the rush and did a great job as a whole defending the line, along with the middle of the ice. He had a few moments of sound puck handling, not known for his fluidity or necessarily skill, he did a good job at carrying the puck out of trouble and through the neutral zone, along with around the offensive zone when there was some space to work with. When he was up to speed, he was very difficult to slow down and or reach around to get a stick in on. In the offensive zone he made his presence felt with shot, after shot, after shot. Hammering shots on the line through a heavy slapshot, and or zipping them on goal with a wrister, he had several quality looks from the line. Another leading defensive piece for the Jr. Mounties in their Day 1 loss.

One of the most notable defenders in the game, the size, mobility, and physicality Brody Berard played with shutdown numerous plays, and allowed him to regain possession for his squad repeatedly. His quickness and mobility allowed him to anticipate, step up on puck carriers, and make quick stick checks and body checks to force the puck free, deny zone entries, and protect the middle of the ice. The long reach, stride, in combination with his strong reads and hockey IQ made him very strong in 1-on-1 defensive situations. His soft puck handles under pressure was another asset of his, trusted to move the puck out of his own end, he did a nice job executing simple passes under pressure. Rounding out his game, he showed no fear in regards to putting his body on the line, getting in shooting lanes, and blocking shots – something I’m sure all his teammates appreciate him for.

Brody Berard did an excellent job at locking down the game for Mount St. Charles as the clock ticked down, utilizing his size and defensive skillset to kill plays, clear pucks, and force turnovers. Under pressure he made some good plays with the puck, for his size he has some good hands and good small area plays. Physically he was able to absorb contact, make plays with a checker on his shoulder, and protect the puck well. He broke up some plays later in the game with sweeping stick checks, anticipating plays, and jumping up on puck carriers. 1-on-1 he was very tough to deal with as a result of his speed, power, and overall ability to read plays, not overcommit to things, and play a good blend of conversative, and when necessary, aggressive defense.
