Boyer was able to showcase his high-end offensive ability effectively, making him one of the mor dangerous forwards to grace the ice at this year’s event. His elusiveness in the offensive zone allowed him to shake defenders around the perimeter with a series of cuts and spins, which made him quite difficult to contain. He was spotting his options quickly both off the rush and coming out of turns off the cycle, demonstrating the ability to execute cross-ice passes both on his forehand and backhand. Boyer was leveraging his skill level in one on one situations, combining his quick stickhandling and skating to get pucks around defenders or perform quick cuts to the inside and catch them flat-footed. As he did in the M18 Québec circuit, he was also putting a bunch of pucks on net from all sorts of angles, looking to catch goaltenders off guard or to cause havoc in the crease area. In the future I’d like to see him limit the amount of time he shoots from bad angles, but the rest of his game seemed much improved.

There aren’t many players in this draft class who possess more skill than Samuel Boyer. The Riverains crafty forward has an impressive set of hands to go along with some impressive edgework, that he uses to patrol along the perimeter in the offensive zone and evade defenders. He loves having the puck on his stick and he isn’t afraid to peel back in the neutral zone if he doesn’t like what he sees off the rush. He can be guilty of holding onto the puck too long waiting for the perfect play to open up, and I would like to see him use his plus-level tools to try and gain access to the middle of the ice rather than hang along the perimeter. He also likes to put the puck on net from all over the offensive zone, even if his slight frame limits the power he gets off his shots, which doesn’t make him much of a shooting threat. Although he’s a bit raw and underdeveloped thus far, the potential for a player like Boyer is sky high and I am very much looking forward to seeing how he progresses.

2024 QMJHL Cup Third-Place Game- Team Briere vs Team Bourque
It was a bit of an inconsistent showing for Boyer, although the high-end skill was able to rear its head in particular moments. His one great play of the game came off a give-and-go with Lygitsakos, where he dished off then skated into space, got the puck back and placed a perfect shot over the goaltender’s shoulder. Boyer was using his edgework well in certain instances, using it to make quick cuts to the inside to get away from pressure and get a shot off.

2024 QMJHL Cup- Team Marchand vs Team Bourque
Boyer was able to pull together one of the more impressive performances I’ve seen from him throughout the entire season. From the drop of the puck he was flashing his high-end skill set on nearly every shift, demonstrating evasiveness in small areas in the offensive zone and great vision to spot cross-ice passing options. He was delivering pucks to teammates on both his backhand and forehand, at times feathering passes over multiple sticks that landed perfectly on a blade. He showed dynamic one on one skill in the first period by attacking a defender head on, getting the puck through him before completing a backhand pass to a teammate who scored. I even saw a compete level that I hadn’t entirely seen from him, at least consistently, throughout the year. He was engaged in board battles and fighting for loose pucks along the perimeter, even coming out with the puck against larger opponents. He was managing the puck efficiently as well, often putting pucks into safe areas in the offensive zone with pressure draped all over him

2023-24 LHM18AAAQ Playoffs- Collège Esther-Blondin Phénix vs Collège Charles-Lemyone Riverains
My last few viewings of Boyer have been very positive as he continues to show proper development in key areas of his game. He was really flashing his skill in this one, using deceptive fakes and slick stickhandling moves to create space for himself and operate in the offensive zone. I thought he even showed a willingness to attack the middle of the ice with the puck on his stick, which was one of my major qualms with Boyer at the beginning of the year. His goal in this game was a breakaway goal where he made a nifty forehand-backhand move and slipped the puck five-hole. He had a slick powerplay assist as well in the second period when he delivered a no-look cross-crease pass to Anthony Blouin for the game winning goal. I’m really looking forward to watching Boyer’s game continue to progress and if he can keep up his momentum heading into the QMJHL Cup in April.

2023 CCM Challenge: Collège Charles-Lemoyne Riverains vs Trois-Rivières Estacades
Boyer showed off his usual flashes of skill in this one and was effective along the half wall on the powerplay. He’s able to get pucks into high danger areas by showing a good understanding of how to change the angles of his passes to get it through bodies. He’s a bit undersized, although he still finds ways to get to the crease area in his off-puck movement. He operates a little too much along the perimeter in the offensive zone, which makes him easier to contain than he should be given his skill level.
