EVENT U15 Canadian Crown
I was pretty impressed with the Broncos team on the whole and their top line was a consistent threat throughout the tournament. Moen is likely the member of that top line with the clearest route to the junior level as he embodies the stereotypical Saskatchewan player with size, strength, speed, and attention to detail in all three zones. He led the entire Hemmerling division, which housed most of the higher caliber teams in the tournament, with 13 points in 5 games. There aren’t many weaknesses to nitpick in his game as he carries himself the right way with a defence first focus and ability to turn sound play behind the puck into chances up ice. He really leans on his athleticism and stride power to push the pace transitionally and he has the speed to charge forward as the entry man and push defenders back. There aren’t many bells and whistles in his game, but he is incredibly impactful nonetheless. He takes a bit of a backseat as an on-puck creator in the offensive end as he lacks high end vision or creativity but is far from a passenger as he works to clear space and use his physicality to create havoc down low. It’s sometimes hard to write a report on a player of Moen’s ilk as he is so well rounded and steady in all aspects that it’s hard to identify real areas that need development. He has great instincts at both ends of the ice, is one of the more accomplished players at this level in turning defence into offence, and has scalable physical tools that will play at any level. For those looking for a plug and play middle six junior player, Moen fits the bill.

His skating stride power, agility, and determination to hunt down pucks are all easily translatable qualities moving up levels. I think it is easy to see how his skating and pacing are going to play at the pace of the WHL. His physical maturity in board battles, net front positioning, and strength in his shot release are coming along too. In the games I watched, he had a heavy snap shot from the short side which trickled home and found more snapshots from the high slot in other games. He’s not looking to overly stickhandle or dangle around opponents. His play is suited to one-on-one puck races and net front secondary chances. The key will be to find a bit more consistency on finishing those offensive opportunities. Either way, he’s got a very high floor when it comes to projectable U20 hockey.
