This might be the first defender on the list where I feel like his defensive instincts as a shutdown-style player will be his bread and butter. He can evade the forecheck using his reach, problem solve by pre-scanning and keeping his head up, and use his physicality to maintain gap control and push players off their games along the rush or in the corners. He is a big presence and has all the tools to be a solid top-4 WHL defender who lets an offensive partner take the reins on the rush.

PCHA Sea Devils vs. North Island Silvertips - OCTOBER 24, 2020
Lahey was someone we were looking forward to seeing. Shows good poise with the puck and defends one on ones very well. Has a long reach that he uses to disrupt offense. In a game like this where the caliber is lower would have liked to seen him make more of an impact. Not very physical and let an opponent get to the front of the net and bang a loose puck home. Need to see a little more urgency in his game.

He’s the kind of defenseman who is usually the last guy back. The defensive presence that relies on his physicality to push guys off the attack. A lot of his overall habits as far as shoulder checks, scans, passing decisions to the middle of the ice for outlets come from great instincts. His overall movement and hands with puck control for his size are quite good. His longer legs and size are both a reason for his defensive breakouts and a way for him to improve. When he continues to improve the strength in his lateral agility defensively, he will be a tough defensive match up. He could also improve how often and when he uses his stick to sweep or break up plays earlier upon entry. Either way, he showed quality exit passes to the middle, can stand up physically, and showed higher-end evasiveness to escape the F1 in order to move pucks efficiently.
