BWC was overmatched in the championship, going 0-3, but I was really impressed with Bonkowski’s shift to shift consistency and ability to be a catalyst at both ends of the ice for his team. He has always been a slick customer with the puck on his stick but his play without the puck has really improved. He was using his speed very effectively on the penalty kill and has nice instincts in hurrying the opposition while staying composed and aware himself. He showed a knack for pressuring defenceman at the point into quick decisions before intercepting the pass attempt or knocking down the dump attempt and turning the puck up ice on the counter-attack. On the offensive side of the puck, speed and skill is the name of the game for Bonkowski. He can absolutely fly in open ice and his light stride and sharp edgework make him really slippery along the wall. His hands match his feet and when attacking downhill he can make defenders look silly with dangles through traffic. While I think Bonkowski has the tools to be a consistent generator of offence most of his chances currently are generated off the rush or on opportunistic plays pouncing on opposition mistakes. He is currently far less able to create and problem solve once play is established deep in the offensive zone. He has a slight frame and is lacking the strength to muscle his way to the interior consistently. When defensive structures play mistake free hockey and key on Bonkowski early to limit his ability to enter with speed, he can go through stretches of invisibility as he struggles to get to the net. I think there is versatility in his skillset, and I will be watching closely to see if he can develop his physicality to become a more consistent threat off the cycle.

The leading scorer on Burnaby Winter Club U15 Prep is still early in his physical development listed at 5’8 and 135 lbs which adds to the excitement with building power and acceleration through his quick lateral cuts. His best offensive weapon comes when he shifts laterally off the rush to his forehand and elevates the puck. He finds that separation space in scoring areas and was doing that more and more as the year went along. I think his edges and turns will translate up layers and his good four-directional balance will continue to improve too. He loves to shoot back against the grain and use the quick-twitch motions in his hands. I’d like to see him filter in a bit more delays and longer possession approach since he can escape with his feet under pressure as players close on him. The key to his successes will be in his agility, quickness, and explosivity though and I’m excited to see how much more separation he can find once he matures.

It took Bonkowski most of the tournament to find his feet, but this was his best game by a mile. I think he struggled a touch to adjust to his different role on this team as a lower line player, but everything seemed to click today. He was reading the opposition intentions and had a great feel for when to jump passing routes. A couple of his pass interceptions led to immediate dangerous scoring chances. He was also using his speed on the forecheck to force mistakes and was especially disruptive on the penalty kill. His puck movement was also on point as he used his quick hands to reposition the puck and find seams through traffic.
