Bringing a good level of compete and energy to the table, Cole Mazzoni blended some solid skill and physical presence to the table, dropping the shoulder, pushing the puck out wide and driving around his man. He had some good speed and puck skills as he worked down the wings, he managed to get some shot attempts on net as a result of these speed and power, creating opportunities out of limited ice. On the penalty kill he consistently was still bringing this high level of effort, pressuring puck carriers, and forcing turnovers in the offensive zone. He made some nice plays in tight to the net as well, continuing to use his size and strength to endure contact, pull pucks through feet and sticks, and manage to thread passes through crowds, and or get pucks directed at the net from dangerous areas in tight. He also had a few good looks powering his way out from behind the net, quick movements on his feet, once again showing that 1-on-1 skill to get around opponents, he slipped pucks through defenders with quick reactions to aggressive movements and got some good clean looks in close proximity. He was certainly one of the leading catalysts for the Victory Honda offense, showing some nice skills that will be useless at the next level.

Out of curiosity I always look where these standout players I identify sit in team scoring for their respective teams, and Cole Mazzoni sits second behind previously mentioned Brock Burch – and that makes some sense after watching him. The big frame, power, and reach with the puck allowed Mazzoni to carve out ice for himself, make plays through the middle, protect the puck, and create scoring chances for himself and others from the center ice position. He worked very well with Burch at punching out passes wide in transitions, along with being the first on pucks around the crease, whacking away at rebound chances as he contended for space with his opposition. He got a deflection goal in a game against the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies, getting a stick on a low shot from the point, it was further evidence of his size, balance, and strength, making him an effective player from the dirty areas of the ice. Even on individual rush chances Mazzoni showed off some nice talent, executing a few curl-and-drag shots, pulling pucks around the stick of defenders and firing them on net, it was a nice element of evasion and creativity to further his offensive threat.
