I was quickly drawn to Jackson Schaefer’s efficiency as a puck mover but as the event went along, I became even more impressed with the consistency he displayed in his passing game. His decision-making with the puck was exceptional, never showing any signs of panic as a puck handler but instead being able to calmly execute using his excellent vision and crisp passing ability to facilitate plays out of his own end and kickstart chances in transition with an accurate outlet pass to the closest teammate or a long stretch passes to send his forwards in behind the opposing defence. His puck-moving tools were especially noticeable on retrievals in his own end as his hands and feet worked together to rapidly escape pressure after scooping up the puck and his awareness on the ice allowed him to instantly spot teammates swinging up the ice and quickly advance pucks out of the defensive zone. The high volume of smart and effective puck touches in all areas of the ice made him such an impactful presence on the ice whether it was his play along the offensive blue line, his play along the boards, or his play in the defensive zone using his quick-problem solving to set up offensive opportunities for his team.
