Edwards was at it again in this one. Speed speed speed is the name of his game in this tournament, winning offensive zone puck races on a few occasions, wrestling his way through pressure and gaining valuable space. He found many opportunities to get under defenders, get in sneaky stick lifts to gain possession, and create chances for his linemates including a solid pass into scoring areas as the 2nd period came to a close, nearly putting Canada White up 3-0. He was quiet for stretches and didn’t have a tremendous output, but he was effective, intense and resilient which were key ingredients going into Canada White tipping the scales in their favour more and more.

Edwards’ quickness to step into space and challenge defenders was on display early in the game, stepping aggressively into space off the puck and challenging opponents one on one with it. He jumps into the rush so effectively and opens gaps against his opponents with ease. He came out of nowhere on a few shorthanded rushes as a complimentary option, staying in space and engaging with his partner, and he brought good two-way intensity and quickness to the game that put him a step ahead of many. It wasn’t a spectacular game from Edwards, but he was certainly one of the players willing to gallop up the ice and drive deep into the offensive zone whenever possible. Under pressure he stuck to the puck and managed to make plays more often than not, and showed potential as a solid forechecker, especially with some skating refinements in the coming years.

I wanted to highlight Edwards here for how effectively and consistently he was getting himself into advantageous positions off-puck and for his detailed defensive game both five on five and on the penalty kill. In the offensive zone he always had his feet moving looking to jump in and out of pockets of ice to get himself into space and make himself a passing option in a prime scoring area. The timing on his off-puck routes were quite impressive as well which earned him plenty of looks from in close as he was able to pounce on loose pucks in the low slot. His best work in this game came on the penalty kill where he was able to get his stick into lanes and forecheck heavily once his team got a clear to disrupt Czechia’s controlled breakouts, win back possession and shield the puck to waste time.
