Rudolph was the star of the weekend. After scoring two goals including the overtime winner in the semi finals, he followed it up with a hattrick, four points in total, and yet another overtime game winner to lead CIHA to the victory in the finals. He uses his size and strength so effectively to bull his way into high danger areas where his skill takes over. There have been some question marks about his speed in past years, but I think he’s really improved his pace of play both in his raw explosiveness and in his ability to make plays at full gallop. There is no area where a defender can feel truly comfortable against Rudolph. He is a handful when moving downhill and if he gains half a step has the strength to hold off any attempts to regain positioning. Along the wall, he protects the puck with his frame constantly testing the elasticity of a defensive structure and finding weak points laterally to attack the net or feed cross ice passes. He is also punishing on the forecheck with the mindfulness and stick skill to gather possession himself immediately following a bone crunching check. Rudolph really elevated his game in the big moments of the championship series and that clutch gene paired with improving confidence should serve him well as he transitions to the junior level. At worst I think he fits in as a two-way energy player on the lower lines, but I think he has the understated intelligence to play higher in the lineup.
