As the only 2008 born skater to play regularly in this league last year it should come as no surprise that Olson is one of the standouts early in the season. He plays with a ton of confidence and is already looked at as a leader for his team. Olson plays with a nice marriage of skill and strength. When he gets motoring downhill he is a tough player to stop as he is never content with the perimeter play. If you give him an inch towards the centre of the ice, he will take a mile and his ability to get the puck to the net-front created numerous scoring chances over the weekend. I thought the Raiders coaching staff made the smart choice to pair two small skill first guys on Olson’s line as his ability to create space opened a lot of real estate for his skilled linemates to roam. As he progresses forward, I could see Olson continuing in a similar role. I don’t know if he quite has the precision or execution to be an elite point producer at the highest levels however, he seems like the type of linemate able to really maximize the talents of those around him and be a perfect complement to skill.

Last season, Brett scored 59 points in 34 AEHL U15 games and was already physically strong enough to progress up to U18 for his draft eligible season. The opportunity continued as he joined Team Alberta U16 for the Canada games as well as the only 2008-born player. Brett is certainly the most physically ready forward available to be selected, and improved his two-way play as a center quite a lot in my eyes. He learned to match speed and momentum on the forecheck and through the neutral zone in order to limit spacing off the rush for his opponents. Brett has a strength to his shot release as well which comes in handy but is still learning to delay and change angles to shoot through screens and around defenders legs. When he enters the zone with possession, I love how he can use slip passes and drop passes to teammates too. One big advantage Brett has too is that he is quite easily a projectable C so that can give him more value come draft day. If you draft Brett, you get a strong, two-way C who is continuing to improve his playmaking and defensive game.

As one of the top scorers from the AEHL for the 2008 class last season, Brett brings an element to his shot release that doesn’t come along every day. He finds his success in motion or while curling back constantly into the slot area to find quick release moments. His snap wrist shot from the wing is dangerous too. He plays well with using his balance to keep his shooting posture open too. I’ll be looking this year to see if he can make little tweaks to his game to loosen up his posture, get that extra little bit of length to his stride, and play with a bit more strategy to his off puck game. Brett has the potential to certainly be the most projectable goal scoring forward from this draft to the next level.

I wanted to highlight Olson here for his overall defensive work in this game and the way he utilized hiss physical and intelligent off-puck play to get himself some looks in the offensive zone. His positioning on the penalty kill lead to him breaking up plenty of cross-ice passes and getting himself into shooting lanes to block shots. He even earned himself a breakaway shorthanded when he poked a puck off a defenders stick and broke in alone although he wasn’t able to capitalize. In the offensive zone he did a great job of supporting the puck and getting himself to the front of the net where he was able to jump on plenty of rebound opportunities, although he wasn’t able to finish off any of them in this contest.

Olson is a true gamer and has a really great grasp of his abilities and what he can do to influence the play. There is a reason he is wearing the “C” for Alberta and I was especially impressed with his focus on maintaining a level of professionalism and playing the game the right way from whistle to whistle even as the play around him deteriorated as the score got out of hand. He is a very physically developed player and uses his strength and coordination to power through traffic and wear down a defence. He scored Alberta’s third goal in this contest with a bullet of a shot, and I think he will have a very smooth transition to higher levels.
