One of the youngest players in the draft is Rink Kelowna’s Cage Smith. He’s a Dec 24th birthday and you can tell at this point he doesn’t have a bit of the skating explosion or physical jam that some of the other players have but it makes you wonder how much he’s gonna add of those components. His game is way more about smart positioning, pass reception, and creative decision making. I know folks quite like him and others still think he’s a bit of a puzzle as to where to place him on their draft boards. At the end of the day when you check the scoresheet, Cage generally has a few points. He had 7 assists in 3 round robin games despite no PP points.

I just wanted to touch on Cage very quickly here. He’s listed at 5’6, 125lbs and his birthday is December 24th. He’s the kind of player that consistently finds his way onto the scoresheet by being in good positioning, making sure to be a passing option, and finding chemistry once zone play is established as far as timed passes and good vision. You won’t find him being erratic with harsh cuts or quickly closing space but he’s so efficient with his energy and how he compliments his linemates. I think he’s a bit of a mystery for folks as far as how high to select him on draft day due to him almost being a 2009 birthday.
