Day 5: 2021 USA Hockey Select 16 Camp - On multiple occasions in this contest, Briere demonstrated his finishing ability by leveraging a readiness and timely execution on passes from behind and beside the net. His goals in this game, while at a glance may appear to have been effortless chip in’s, were actually the result of good positional timing, and confident, as well as precise execution of many small steps leading up to the goal. Briere’s recognition of vulnerable spaces in the offensive zone are one of the major weapons in his arsenal, however, the tool that he seems to possess which may be underappreciated by some is his ability to repeatedly remove barriers for himself, and execute simple plays with immaculate strength and precision. On his second goal in particular, Briere’s combination of a timely stick lift and quick release happened in such rapid succession that most casual viewers would not appreciate the technicalities or specialties employed to earn that tally. It’s characteristics such as this that people are sometimes unconsciously referring to when they speak about how important it is to have players who know how to score. Cam Briere really seems to be that type of player.

2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - White vs Navy Blue
I found in this game that Cam Briere, despite his natural quick skating ability, was able to regulate and moderate not only his own pace, but the general pace of play as well. By carefully selecting his opportunities to use or not use his speed he was able to take advantage of his opponents conservative defense against him and open passing lanes that wouldn’t normally be available. One of the things I really love to see from speedy players is when they begin to recognize that their natural technical abilities can be advantageous when put to use, but also just as a threat. Briere seems to have reached that which is a great sign for his development in my eyes. His high pace give-and-go play with Hunter Ramos mid-way through the 2nd period highlighted his ability to distribute and reset his position rather than puck watch, in order to continue maximizing his opportunity. The sequence led to Team White’s tying goal. There were a few instances of Briere pushing the boundaries of his skill in situations where it may not have been advised. I think it’s something he’ll want to work out of his game because as incredibly valuable as his offensive tools can be in the right context, unnecessary moves that lead to turnovers are not something that will be tolerated by many Junior or College coaches without consistently high offense to match. He has the ability to be impactful and productive without taking unnecessary risks, it just seems to be a bit of a habit to break.
