Day 4: 2021 USA Hockey Select 16 Camp - Early in this game, Russo was one of the few Navy Blue players who seemed to be able to single handedly inhibit White’s sustained zone pressure. His composure and positioning in the defensive zone enabled him to put himself calmly in position to intercept pucks and subsequently clear the zone. Russo’s gettle awareness and persistence were both massive factors in what allowed him to tally Navy Blue’s goal in the second period to get them within two. His subtle off-puck positioning allowed him to discreetly pull the puck out of a defensive zone scrum, and then calmly, but quickly drive the puck up the boards, and through the White defense with strength and persistence. His finishing touch was a great shot on a 2-on-1, to beat the goalie high over his shoulder.

The physically developed power forward has been noticeable on a number of other occasions throughout this tournament as well as in this game. His puck carrying tendencies rely slightly on his advantageous size and reach but he also uses a variety of other skilled elements to create ice for himself as well as a pretty solid tendency to forecast the play so that he can kick off his possessions with the forgiveness of more open ice than he otherwise would.
