Murphy is a smaller defenseman but does not allow that to affect his game. He is still physcial and great at using his body to gain position, separating opponents from the puck. He can contain forwards below the goaline and is good at pinning them on the boards. Murphy can create offense with his quick feet and is poised with the puck. He makes good first passes and excels at finding shooting lanes from the blueline.

As a player who started as the US’ 7th defenceman, I thought by the end of the tournament, Murphy was the most consistent defender on his team and one I was more and more interested in. Even with his smaller stature, he played a lot bigger, defending effectively along the boards and using his body and stick in unison to separate the puck from the opponent. Another underrated part of his game that I noticed was his ability to foil the attackers entries on dump in’s with his hand eye coordination, being able to knock down said dump in attempts before transitioning up ice. He played in all situations and was the USA’s main powerplay quarterback. With his lateral mobility walking the line to open up a shooting lane to put a low shot on for a rebound to his puck distribution from the top of the umbrella, Murphy was very effective in this role.

Murphy has taken a significant step this year and was showcasing his vast skill base which made him a 4th rounder in 2023. His calling card is his mobility and he’s always moving his feet, remaining a constant threat with his quick foot work and explosiveness. He never seems to be stabled to the blueline for too long as he loves to creep low into the zone and keep changing attack angles on his opponents. His hands and shot release aren’t all wordly but like his feet, he is quick, accurate and opportunistic and finds seems by reading off the opposition on when to take a risk.He showed good vision working the puck up ice and was hard to predict for the forecheck with how shifty he is. In his own zone, his size will be a factor at the next level and he likely will need to be sheltered and learn how to pick his spots to defend but feel like he’s got the ability to run a USHL powerplay within the next couple of seasons if that’s the path he chooses.

Another player who, after doing a quick Google search, is unsurprisingly a Youngstown Phantoms prospect, Carter Murphy brought so much skill to the game that undersized defenders like him need to bring. Murphy covered ice effortlessly with powerful strides in all directions, putting in the effort on both sides of the puck that kept him in a strong position on the ice and managed gaps well. He blocked defensive zone entries here and there with his stick checking, and the skating ability allowed him to create space from forecheckers with ease. On the powerplay, he worked off the offensive blueline with skill and clever vision, hitting targets accurately and pinching here and there for potential offense. At times his confidence got the best of him, with some hair-raising moments carrying and moving pucks through the middle of the defensive zone under pressure that very nearly led to disaster, but otherwise Murphy was a strong performer that showcased plenty of talent necessary for players like him to find success. The skating ability in all directions needs to be high-end, and at least at this level, he was a standout.

Murphy has been a favorite of mine through this week’s viewings and it was no different here. Being smaller than a lot of the defensemen here can be a disadvantage, but Carter doesn’t look out of place at all. With his agility and elusiveness, it takes a lot to be able to strip him off the puck. He makes quick and smart decisions with the puck on his stick able to find lanes all around the ice. He was accurate with his stick checks and his backskating really stands out as well, showcasing his ability to stay on top of and square to the attacker

Murphy is an undersized defenseman with great edges and agility. He is very elusive with his head fakes and edgework making it difficult to play the body on him. He is a steady puck mover who consistently made tape to tape passes in all three zones. He never panicked and demonstrated good patience by buying time with his feet, allowing him to find open teammates. He did an excellent job creating shooting lanes for himself from the blueline by faking shots and making shot blockers fall out of lanes. By adding some more strength it will allow him to have a better impact on the game defensively, as he already possesses a good active stick.

Carter Murphy just a bundle of fun and he makes me smile in every game he plays. When his team has possession he flips the switch into “pond hockey” mode and starts flying all over the ice. His shiftiness and constant motion cause matchup nightmares as he probes deep into the offensive zone weaving in and out of traffic in an effort to throw the defensive structure off balance. He is the perfect powerplay quarterback as he walks the line with such pace and deception, has a quick accurate release, and is a deceptive, crisp, and accurate passer. Despite his willingness to play rover with the puck I think he has very good instincts on when that’s appropriate and when he must buckle up defensively. His movement is purposeful, not mindless. I’m not sure what Murphy’s overall ceiling is as a very diminutive defenceman, but I’ll continue to enjoy watching him play.

Murphy is a pretty fun player to watch as he flies around causing chaos and winning battles he has no business winning. He was rewarded for his efforts today with player of the game. Murphy is a truly tiny defenceman however his buzzsaw energy and refusal to give up on a play makes him pretty disruptive in his own zone. As expected, he is often overmatched in physical contests but his willingness to give a second, third, and fourth effort is exactly what a defender of his stature needs to be successful and force opposition mistakes. With possession, he shows flashes of vision and an ability to stretch the ice but he is usually content on making the simple play and doesn’t force things often. He also flexed some of his versatility in this game by playing the bumper spot on the powerplay and scoring the Americans 4th goal from that spot. It is going to be a long uphill climb as a defenceman of his size but you can’t fault the effort he gives on a consistent basis.

Carter was the most impressive defender for Kelly Green in this contest. Murphy was an explosive skater who leveraged his acceleration to burn forecheckers and safely exit his zone with control. What I liked most about Murphy's constant activations. Especially as a weak side passing option, Carter was looking to give the puck carrier a cross-ice passing option by activating up ice with a few strides to put him in a prime position to receive a pass. One of his choices to activate put him in position to receive a cross-ice in-zone pass, and then he swiftly hit an open Jardine net front, who tipped home the pass. Similarly, I noted a handful of sequences where Carter was active, applying pressure on zone exit attempts and pinching down to keep the puck in the offensive zone.

Carter Murphy played a very similar stylistic game to Blake Fiddler; in the sense he was involved offensively and boasted a tremendous skating ability. He was a treat to watch skate with the puck, cutting through the neutral zone and pushing defenders back with crafty stick handles and powerful crossovers. His skating of course helped him on the offensive side of things, but personally, I think it was even more valuable to him when defending. He didn’t get caught flat footed whatsoever, was quick in his backward crossovers and c-cuts and did a great job at maintaining the gap between himself and oncoming rushing forwards. Once he had them where he wanted them, Murphy would connect on an accurate poke check, nullifying the rush chance as he sent the puck into the boards or some other harmless region of the ice.
