Brother of Chaz, Cruz Lucius is on the U17 NTDP team and is eligible for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. It’s interesting that Cruz’ brother, Chaz, plays the role of an elite goal scorer, whereas Cruz plays the role of a playmaker. (Cruz) Lucius has amazing vision and is a phenomenal passer; putting up 16 assists in 22 games for the U17 National team and 7 assists in 12 games for the USNTDP Juniors. Lucius is also good at protecting the puck, he has very good balance making it difficult to knock him off the puck. Lucius is able to endure the beatings it takes to protect the puck along the wall and in the corners, allowing his team to maintain puck possession. Defenders must always be wary of what move Lucius may attempt to pull off when the puck is on his stick, as he is capable of making defenders look silly if they make even the smallest mistake. Lucius’ shot isn’t bad by any means either, it isn’t elite level, but still poses a threat to goalies if the opportunity arises, as it is hard and accurate. Lucius is an interesting skater, as he lacks next level acceleration, but once he gets moving, he is one of the fastest players on the ice. Defensively Lucius is a responsible player who will engage in puck battles to strip the puck off opponents with a stick lift. At times in his own defensive end he can seem a bit too passive, but like so many of these young players the defense will come in time. Lucius isn’t afraid to engage in physical play against bigger opponents, as he doesn’t hesitate to attack the crease to get the gritty goals and will throw the occasional body check. Like his brother, Cruz has committed to the University of Minnesota.
