Stuart played a solid game both nights, forcing some turnovers and using his speed to win puck races. He was good in his own end making plays on breakouts through the middle of the ice. Stuart played a good depth role for the Americans and had a positive impact on the ice. Away from the puck he defended well and was physical although undersized.

Stuart gets overshadowed because of the plethora of talent throughout the US lineup but he really showed me some glimpses of his offensive potential and all around game. He was showcasing crafty, manipulative play with the puck, using his quickness to shift, curl up and change attack angles. He isn’t over complex with how he creates plays but he’s got really good vision, delivers pucks crisp to the tape and shows that he has a range of gears he can use to exploit defenders who may be on their heels. He’s got a quick and sneaky shot release which isn’t overly hard but jumps off his stick and challenges netminders. Off the puck he was accountable in all zones and worked his tail off to get on the right side of pucks and get puck moving out of the zone and onto the attack.

In support of his team's transition, Jake Stuart showed good awareness of when and how to add and modulate speed to effectively gain the offensive zone. He was capable of adding speed in a few good crossover strides at the right moment so that he could become available to his linemates. As a puck carrier, he was just as creative with his speed and position, finding or creating pockets of space as necessary to deploy the puck from. He has the unique gift of being able to act with both patience and urgency as the moment demands. His patience and composure with the puck while under pressure was a notable strength which helped him to make decisions which fed his teams offensive attack. It's much more common to see players in similar types of situations just eat the puck, chip it away, or even simply cough it up. In contrast, when an opportunity blinked, he was Johnny on the spot, and ready to execute a shot, pass or defensive play with split-second reaction time.

When the Jr Kings began to find their groove in the 2nd period, it was on the backs of players like Jake Stuart who were able to interject themselves into the Saints relentless attack and effectively force turnovers. Stuart hounded puck carriers with equal or greater speed, remaining disciplined with his reach as he fought to strip pucks. Additionally he was shrewd and detailed in the routes he chose when playing defense, intercepting a number of the Saints attempted long range passes, and gluing the puck to his stick for a sustainable recovery.

Admittedly, I was waiting to see Jake Stuart become of significance in this tournament, and today he did so. A player as talented as himself should be noticeable almost every shift and he did a decent job at that I found. A long and powerful stride made him advantageous in transition, covering plenty of ice in a few strides coupled with good turnover rate in his feet, he had a bit of sneaky speed to him that would overpower defenders. Defensively, he made some great stick checks, one of which was a sprawling poke check to deny Jacob Cloutier to walk into the slot alone, potentially saving a goal. He used his size to get involved in battles, winning a handful of them, regaining possession for his team. Expect a big game from Jake Stuart tomorrow.

Jake Stuart kept at it in Day 3 of the camp by utilizing his long stride to converge on puck carriers, forcing errant passes, and forming quick counters through some decent processing speeds and quick puck skills. He has consistently taken smart routes to defenders on the forecheck and loose pucks, utilizing some good strength and high pace to engage contact, and quickly strip his opponent of the puck. His most impactful offensive play with a nice half-spin he made off the rush leaning into a defender before dishing a backhand pass to Cooper Simpson who darted towards the net.

Yet another Los Angeles Jr. Kings member on the standout list, Jake Stuart’s shiftiness and intelligent puck routes and usage of the body had him slipping around defenders and giving them fits all game. On one particular play he managed to strip the puck off a defender deep in the OZ, slipped in front of them with an explosive step, and forced the Team Matthews defender to take a tripping call. The fluidity and ability to take the puck off the wall and immediately create space is a very valuable skill. His best chance of the game came off intercepting a cross-ice pass in the offensive zone, and quickly snapping a puck on goal. Some good speed, and reads enabled him to jump on the opportunity to swat down the pass to get a shot on goal.

In my notes I preface all 3-points I had written about Jake Stuart with “good”, which perfectly describes his game. Nothing was spectacular, but good. Off the rush he managed to find some space for himself where he could retrieve passes and further the offensive attack as he now had possession in high danger areas of the ice. Along the boards and on the forecheck he was able to converge on puck carriers and engage in physical contact, stappling them to the wall as he dug at their skates to fish the puck out. On the forecheck he was able to intercept a few passes outright, generating quick counterattacks with some good reactionary play.

Jake Stuart was fantastic on the rush and through the middle of the ice in transition for Team Forest Green. He was absolutely flying up the ice with rapid crossovers, elite acceleration, and hands to match his pace of play. His value in transition cannot be understated, as he was able to open up plenty of ice for his teammates with these speedy zone entries. On occasion he would take the puck himself and fire a couple strong shots on goal, demonstrating a good ability to shoot in stride with some decent power.
