Plain and simple, Jaxon Jacobson was a difference maker for the Wheat Kings in this tournament and unfortunately went down to injury early in the championship game which really hindered his team due to just how dynamic he is. His mix of high-end playmaking and hockey IQ made him dangerous every shift. He has a very good shot but tended to play a pass first game through the week, only scoring once while adding an impressive 11 assists. His vision in the offensive zone set him apart from his competition, as some of the passes he completed seemed impossible. His creativity with the puck really allowed him to open up a lot of space for the likes of Easton Odut and Brady Turko.

Projectable Skills: High hockey IQ, quick touch passes, off puck positioning
Development Opportunities: Size and strength
Jaxon is a December-born prospect, the son of Brandon Wheat Kings owner Jared Jacobson, and is one of only three 2008-born players playing U18 hockey this season. This is a lot to unpack. It just so happens that where Brandon selects in the draft and the potential talent level of Jaxon seem to line up fairly nicely. Since Jaxon is certainly not as physically mature as his older teammates, he’s always excelled at quick passes, good vision, quality decision making in key offensive moments, and filling gaps when need be. He projects to be way more of a top-line compliment player who works in puck possession systems. Since Jaxon is already well-rounded and smart, the majority of his growth will just come from adding size and strength to his game as one of the youngest players available in the draft. The obvious speculation is that he will end up in Brandon at pick number 5 when all shakes down, but hey, you never know.

I thought the camp showed many of Jaxon’s elements to be just as good as I figured they’d look. He’s normally a player who maintains a high-end compliment role on Brandon but here he had to be more of the puck rush and individual one-on-one move player. He was catching passes from behind him between his legs, settling loose pucks, playing give-and-go with Chartrand, and adapting to play. The reason he’s able to be such a dominant presence already in U18 comes down to his poise and subtlety. The puck control and processing is already high level and as one of the youngest players in the draft, he’s obviously just going to get better. Jaxon is the kind of player who joins a line to make the line elite.

Jacobson had some very impressive moments early on in the game. He may lack a bit of pace and top speed, but he showcased some very creative passing work with a particularly clever behind the back pass below the goal line that nearly gave Canada Red a lead they never had. Jacobson could be found winning races here and there during the game as well with an explosive first step to gain a bit of leverage on opponents. He showed good positioning off the puck with strong supportive instincts and quick decisions that largely moved things in the right direction. Quick chip and chase plays, and keeping things simple and effective while maintaining a bit of flash and creativity at times, Jacobson had a solid performance here, especially earlier in the match. He also served up one of Canada Red’s best chances to start a comeback in the third period setting up Maddox Dagenais but to no avail. I also noted some instances of strong hand-eye coordination, knocking pucks down in the offensive zone and getting in the way of potential breakouts to extend offensive zone possession time.

I thought Jacobson did some of the best work of any of the Canada Red forwards of creating sustained pressure in the offensive zone by using his footspeed to win races to loose pucks and generate cycle sequences as a consequence. Even when his line would lose possession Jacobson would always be the first one pressuring the opposition and working hard to get the puck back. This was best exemplified in the third period when he snuck up behind a defender, stick lifted him off the puck and made a quick centering feed that just missed its intended target. He nearly earned a primary assist in the final frame when he flexed his playmaking muscles off the rush by executing a near perfect saucer pass to the low slot that hit a teammate in stride that was just deflected wide over the net. Jacobson showed good finishing ability in the slot when he was the recipient of a beautiful Landon DuPont saucer pass that he was able to corral in tight and fire a quick shot that found its way through the arm of the Finnish goaltender.

Jacobson is a difference maker plain and simple and it seemed like every time Brandon needed a big shift, he was leading the way. He sees the game at a different level than most of the players at this championship and makes it look easy at times. He is so deft at daintily maneuvering in tight spaces before finding teammates with soft touch and tape to tape execution. He found a pretty backdoor pass on the powerplay on Brandon’s second goal and one upped himself later with an incredible assist on their sixth goal. After Sydney scored to cut the lead to one past the midpoint of the third period, Jacobson pushed the puck through the centreman on the ensuing faceoff, burst wide past one defenceman, then threatened shot before calmly finding his teammate across the crease to restore the two-goal lead six second later. Outstanding performance from one of the top 2008 born players in North America.

Jacobson proved this game he can be threatening in all aspects of offense, setting up 3 assists and getting numerous scoring chances. He was very creative with the puck, showcasing his proven ability to drag in defenders to create openings for his linemates. He could wheel the puck up the middle up the ice and gain zone entry with ease before handing the puck off and setting up on the half wall as an option.

Jacobson was easily the Wheat Kings best player in this contest and was the only player who seemed to be able to find cracks in the Cantonniers armour on a regular basis. His playmaking instincts and ability to find the creative pass were on full effect in this game as he set up most of Brandon’s best chances including their only goal on the night with a beautiful stretch pass to set up his linemate on a breakaway. There is a precision and mental acuity in his game that you only see with the top players, and he reminded everyone why he is considered one of the best players of his age group. My only knock on him in this game was being perhaps a touch too pass heavy and not generating more looks for himself. He has that grit and determination to get interior and I think he could have been more selfish at times.

Jacobson was again the point of the spear for Manitoba offensively as he scored a goal and added an assist in this contest. His pass on the first goal was an especially impressive tape to tape pass into a miniscule window. There is a leadership quality that oozes from Jacobson and there is a clear reason he wears the “C” for Manitoba. Whenever Manitoba started to get really caved in on the defensive side of the puck by Alberta, it seemed like it was always Jacobson who reignited the team’s belief with a chance up ice. His feel for the seams in a defensive structure is excellent and his ability to skate the puck east/west opens up a ton of space behind him. He always seems to drag multiple defenders to him which creates open opportunities for his teammates.

Jacobson slotted into the lineup after missing last game and his presence was immediately felt. He gives Manitoba a counterattacking threat that teams must worry about. If the opposition sends the kitchen sink in the service of offence, Jacobson has the explosiveness and finish to punish even the smallest of mistakes the other direction. He scored a really nice goal on the rush in this game where he cut towards the middle and fired a far side shot on the top corner. He also does a really great job of attracting the eyes of defenders with his ability to cut across lanes and rag the puck through traffic before finding his open teammates lost in coverage.
