I don’t believe there’s a defenseman that I came away more impressed with after this event than Daigneault. The mobility for a 6’3 and 180 lbs makes him standout more than he already does, and it’s been noticeable to see how much his confidence has grown over the year which has led to a better utilization of his gifted physical tools. He wasn’t afraid to control the puck at the offensive blueline and use his skating ability to shake pressure at the top and descend into secondary coverage. He was consistently getting pucks through on net from the point by keeping his head up and threading pucks through lanes with low, hard and accurate shots. I thought he was the best Québec defender at timing his pinches in the offensive zone, using his long reach to keep pucks alive and extend possession time. In the defensive zone he was using his large wingspan and deceptive mobility to smother opposing forwards and lure them to congested areas.

Daigneault’s projectable style of play was on full display throughout the duration of this game. The puck moving has improved immensely since the beginning of the year, where instead of deferring to his teammate he now keeps his head up and assesses what is in front of him. He seems to be more aware of the physical tools he possesses as well, often using his skating ability to skate the puck out of danger when the play broke down in front of him. He showed good scanning habits on his retrievals as well, which allowed him to make quick plays on breakouts. His lateral mobility from the blueline allowed him to walk the line and wait for lanes to open up for him, even though his puck control is still a work in progress and there were a few bobbles at the line that lead to some odd man rushes the other way.

This was one of the better viewings I’ve seen from Daigneault all season long. The way he’s able to move for a 6’3 and 181 defender is quite remarkable, as he displays great agility which he uses to beat defenders from atop the offensive blueline. He was displaying immense confidence with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone, walking the line with his head up and always looking to exploit pressure at the line with a quick move to get around a checker. He was consistently able to get pucks through from the line and create rebounds out front for teammates in the slot area. He was making smart pinches to keep pucks alive in the offensive zone as well, which lead to sustained offensive zone time for Québec and more scoring chances as a consequence.
