It is sometimes hard for me to remain objective and discerning when watching Duguay as his vision, creativity, feel, and touch when it comes to playmaking is borderline mesmerizing. Nothing gets me out of my seat quicker than a world class pass and I don’t know if there’s another player in this class that does it with more frequency than Duguay. One underrated aspect of his game is his play at the net-front. He is far from the biggest player but he has great instincts for when to disengage and take another tack and his ability to fish puck out of the crease and reposition the angle for a shot or clever pass out of the traffic is why he plays the crease position on the powerplay. He finished the game with three assists and threatened far more.

Duguay has always been one of my personal favourite players to watch from this age group as he is so creative and unpredictable with the puck. His playmaking instincts and vision are among the best in this age group as he always has a comprehensive mental picture of the rest of the skaters on the ice. There are moments in every game where I wonder how on earth he found that teammate. He can make cross ice, small window, and perfect weight passes even under extreme duress. Duguay also has the skill and comfort level with possession to create those lanes if they don’t already exist. He crosses over defensive coverage east/west and attacks seams to get defenders to collapse on him before finding his newly open teammates for opportunities. I can’t say enough positive things about his skills as a distributor; he always has a plan, executes at a high level, and creates so many chances throughout a game. While I wax poetic about Duguay’s talent as a passer he is far from a one trick pony in the offensive end and at this championship he flexed his feel around the net. He has great instincts as an off-puck player and has an enhanced feel for spacing. He isn’t a big player, but he is consistently around the net front, showing excellent timing for when to dart in and out of the high danger areas of the ice. His soft hands and ability to navigate traffic is so pronounced that he is often deployed as the net-front player on the powerplay despite his limited stature. I think Duguay has the skill, smarts, and creativity to be one of the premiere point producers from this age group however he will need to continue to develop his physical tools to ensure he doesn’t hit a wall at higher levels. He’s not the biggest, strongest, or fastest player so improving those areas will be a top priority to reach what I think is an exceptionally high ceiling.
