I wasn’t too sure what to make of Kadon in my first couple watches. He didn’t demand the puck as a puck carrier. He wasn’t making ridiculous plays with the puck on his stick. He didn’t have that sense of a “wow factor” as some would say. I think I didn’t expect there to be so many details to Kadon’s game which impressed me over time. Kadon has a knack for reading pressure, spinning off coverage, having his stick in great positioning, and making his feet do the work. For someone who is 6’2-6’3 already, he is just an incredibly well-balanced skater. It allows him to forecheck heavily, use his reach, and make so many little smart plays by being in the right space at the right time. I realized that I don’t need him to be the dominant puck carrier all the time or create with flash and flair. Some of the best WHL players just do everything you need them to do by making touch passes, protecting in transition and along the boards, sitting net front, side of net, deflecting shots, and just being overall gems. I think Kadon was one of those rare players in this draft and should fit in beautifully with what Medicine Hat is building in star potential. He rose all the way up to 13th in our PuckPreps ranking.

While Alberta had a very hard time getting pucks into the home plate area or finding the moments to wait for proper screens, Kadon was maybe the only one sitting net front and using his screens and rebounds to his advantage. He was forechecking heavily too which came as a bright light. He scored off a screen and rebound and if it wasn’t for a high stick call he’d have had two goals in a similar manner.
