Scouting Report
EVALUATED 21/01/2021Devin Rodger
Luke Hughes is the final brother, and biggest, of the Hughes dynasty who will have his name called early by an NHL team come the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He is a danger on offence every time he steps on the ice. Hughes is poised with the puck on his stick, plays with his head up, and under pressure he will more than likely suck in two defenders and then make a play to an open man. If he is not starting the rush on his own, his first pass is hard, crisp and right on the tape of the breaking forward. His skating, like his brothers, is at an elite level. from edge work to seamless crossovers and great first steps of acceleration. If Hughes finds himself in trouble his skates can get him out of it more often than not. Luke’s shot could use some work with release times and added strength, but that can come with time and some work. His defensive game also lacks in a few areas like great gap control at times, and for his size he does not seem to utilize it in terms of net front presence. I would not call Luke Hughes the complete package but in today’s game of puck moving and smooth skating defensemen, he will excel at the next level with a high ceiling for his NHL career.
