Masun Fleece has been one of the top scorers within the Shattuck St. Mary’s program for some time now and his blend of speed and power helps him exploit teams offensively. With a powerful inside step and some soft hands he can drop the shoulder and drive towards the middle of the ice off the rush, with his good upper body strength he can stay on his feet, keep the puck out of the reach of defenders, all whilst making forward progression. Routinely during the games viewed I had noticed Fleece taking a liking to attacking down the wing and making aggressive moves to the middle with varying success. Considering he’s playing against older opposition the success rate of this somewhat predictable move is less than what it would be against his peers, but besides that, the fact he is able to overpower older opponents every now and then is noteworthy and an indication of his physical maturity. Boasting some decent shooting talent as well, with a quick and heavy snapshot he can surprise goalies as the puck explodes off his blade with little wide-up time. I wouldn’t say he drove play at an extremely high level when I was watching, but he does a tremendous job at getting into dangerous areas of open ice and finishing plays whether it be an in-tight play or a catch-and-release shot. Regarding his playmaking, he showed off some great offensive vision from down low, connecting on seam passes from below the goal line to the slot, helping further establish his offensive diversity. With some fine tuning to his playstyle and some strength gains, Masun Fleece has all the talent to become one of the best 2007-born forwards in the country.

Another member of the pristine Shattuck St. Mary’s program, Masun Fleece has played a bit of every forward position from what I can tell but sticks to either wing the majority of the time from what I can tell. He is an absolute handful to deal with in all situations, with lethal speed and puck skills he is impossible to contain off the rush without near-perfect defensive positioning. He will either overpower a defender as he attacks wide, or make a nifty move to the inside, using his slick hands and speed to slip through defenders. He can get his shot off through traffic and pick corners, the quick release is an aid of his to get the shot off before defenders get a stick in the way. In tight he also has the ability to win puck battles, getting to rebounds first, and ultimately generating high-danger chances from in tight thanks to soft hands and tremendous off-puck tenacity. His relentless playstyle shines through when shorthanded as well, throughout last season it seemed like a given that Fleece would get at least one quality shorthanded scoring chance a game. He plays the puck carrier with incredible aggression whilst balancing it with well calculated defensive measures to assure he isn’t caught out of positioning. This forces defenders to move the puck quickly, in which Fleece is able to intercept the pass and take off down the ice on a breakaway or partial odd-man rush. The physicality, aggression, skill, and defensive ability make Fleece a very well-rounded forward who has plenty of room to further develop his game regarding his long-term outlook as team’s absolute crave big, strong, and fast wingers.

At this stage it seems Masun Fleece is almost a lock to be one of the better players at any event he goes to. The speedy power winger was a handful to deal with as he attacked off the rush. With elite explosiveness he only needs a step or two to leave defenders in his dusts, getting them turning and using his slick hands to shield the puck as he blows right by them and darts towards the crease. It seemed as if every time he had the puck in the offensive zone, he was trying to make something happen, utilizing his skills that few players have, he repeatedly tried to attack the slot and was successful the majority of the time, getting quality shots on goal. Fleece ended the camp with an astounding 4 goals, 6 assists, for 10 points in 4 games.

2023 U17 FIVE NATIONS TOURNAMENT, USA VS GERMANY
Fleece was one of the few disappointments for me in this tournament as he came in with high pedigree, was placed on a line with two standouts in Simpson and Spehar, and yet he still struggled to stand out and make his mark on the game. He was invisible through the first two games and while today was his best performance it also comes against arguably the weakest opponent. There is a player that works in his skillset but I think he’s stuck with too many minor hockey habits. He shows vision and skill but telegraphs many of his intentions which limits the efficacy of his play reading ability. He is not an overly toolsy player as his stride lacks some pop and he is undersized so he can’t rely on raw athleticism to beat his opponent either. There is an intelligence and maturity that is needed in his game to maximize his skill and it wasn’t there often in this tournament. One summer tournament does not make a player however, so I’m intrigued to follow his development and see whether this is the start of a disturbing trend or a blip on the radar.

Masun Fleece is a shifty forward with a knack for winning puck battles. He is very skilled being able to skate and stickhandle his way out of pressure situations and guide the puck to high-danger areas. I really enjoyed watching Fleece this tournament, and am excited for what comes of his future.

2022 USA HOCKEY SELECT 15S PDC GAME REPORT: TEAM WHITE VS TEAM GOLD
Fleece was one of the better players for Gold in this one, despite them struggling to find much offense after the opening few minutes. A crafty player on the puck that was capable of creating a few opportunities for his teammates and finding some shooting lanes for himself. He had a nice hit in the corner to try and spur his team on as the game was slipping out of reach, but they were unable to spark any offense.

I’ve gotten to see Masun evolve for a few years now and he’s just as creative and active as ever. He’s a very sneaky player who looks for spots to jump the gun or take advantage of a defenseman losing sight of him. His skating stride was about average for this game as far as overall speed and separation but he keeps pace by keeping his feet moving constantly. I love the way he opens his posture and can drift wider for shot angles or passes from the exterior. He got a couple prime opportunities in this one and did shoot back across his body far side. A tidy goal and an assist for Masun today.

2022 USA HOCKEY SELECT 15 PDC GAME REPORT: FOREST GREEN VS GOLD
After a bit of a slower start for both teams, Masun Fleece really started to come on about mid-way through the first period. His performance was highlighted by a really determined attitude in traffic and along the boards. He showed a willingness to battle for every puck, asserting his physical presence as well as his slippery skill to separate his opponents from the puck or weasel his way out of a jam. After battling for a puck on a particular dump-in and forcing the puck up the wall where it eventually got to the point, Fleece scurried up to the side of the net where he was able to extend his stick to the far side of the goaltender and perfectly time his deflection of the puck, sending it low through the goaltenders legs. His second goal of the game came on the powerplay when, from the bumper position, Fleece quickly recognized a loose puck in the slot, recovered it and showed great presence of mind to make a broad stroke deke to his backhand, tucking the puck through traffic and over the line. Overall I thought he offered a tremendous physical and skilled impact in this game, leading me to see him as a much more impactful and versatile prospect.

2022 USA HOCKEY SELECT 15S PDC GAME REPORT: GOLD VS. NAVY BLUE
Hands down the top player in this game, and possibly the most skilled player across both teams as a whole. Masun Fleece earns himself a 4.5 game rating, just missing out on the elusive 5-out-of-5 performance. Typically, I wouldn’t view Fleece as a player known for his speed, more of a power forward archetype player who chips away at you with strength and skill; but, in this game he showed he can harm you in whichever playstyle he necessarily chooses. Picking up 1 goal and 3 assists, his point production was a direct result of his physical attributes. His lone goal he won a puck race and was able to quickly snap the puck home with a snapshot, very similar to that of Samuel Spehar’s first goal of the game. Now, his most impressive play was on his first assist of the game showing off an otherworldly display of speed I hadn’t seen from Fleece before. Collecting the puck along the wall in the neutral zone, with 2 quick crossovers he gained speed and set himself up with a straight line to the net with a defender a couple feet to his left in front of him. In just a series of strides he was able to fly past the defender, turning them inside out as he flew in alone on the goaltender. Fleece’s initial chance was stopped but had created a massive rebound that Zachary Spagnuolo had jumped on to give Team Gold a 4-0 lead. Shortly after this he had another chance shorthanded down the left wing, as once again he beat the defender with speed and strong puck protection, drove towards the net and once again was stumped by the goaltender. The next most impressive play on Fleece’s highlight reel for this game alone was a play in the right corner of the offensive zone, as he spun off a check by turning his back to the defender, before sending a no-look backhand pass tape-to-tape to Cooper Dennis on the 5-0 goal. Overall, a tremendous performance from Fleece that just narrowly misses out on that 5-out-of-5 rating, although giving him a 5-out-of-5 wouldn’t be out of the question.

2022 WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINALS: MINNESOTA BLADES (1) VS WESTERN SELECTS (0)
Once again strong, Masun Fleece was buzzing all game. His speed and talent are clearly in the upper levels of the class. With a heavy bias towards attacking down the wing with speed and power he was able to generate some good rush chances as he bulldozed his way to the crease and got up close and personal with the goalie. His crossovers are very strong, allowing him to lean onto opposition as he drives the crease. His hands are also soft, letting him make moves at high speeds and in tight quarters he excels in the role of a power forward.

2022 WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS: WESTERN SELECTS (4) VS WESTERN CANADA PRIME (2)
Masun Fleece was one of the best players for the Western Selects, adding value with and without the puck for the entirety of the game. With excellent size and speed, he is a machine as he attacks off the rush and along the cycle. He can shield the puck excellently thanks to his soft hands and usage of his edges. Scoring one goal in the game, Fleece was able to collect a rebound in front and reach around the stretched-out goalie, tucking the puck to tie the game 2-2. He had also shown great defensive awareness on the penalty kill, playing aggressive to the puck carrier he was able to force zone exits along with he single handily killed 20 seconds off the clock on the penalty kill by shielding the puck in the offensive zone from 3 Western Canada players, ultimately drawing a penalty as a reward for the beating he took.

2022 USA 14U NATIONALS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: CHICAGO MISSION (3) VS SHATTUCK ST. MARY’S (2)
Masun Fleece wasn’t as dominant as he had been in the previous games, but he still was noticeable for Shattuck. He had a couple good looks on net, releasing his wrister on goal from a medium distance, he easily could’ve scored 1 or 2 goals if the puck was just a few inches higher or lower on some of his shots. Fleece ended the US Nationals with 4 goals, 2 assists, for 6 points in just as many games.

At this point Masun Fleece being a standout for Shattuck is given, so we’ll keep it short and sweet to avoid sounding like a broken record. He scored 1 goal in the game, that being the tying goal, as he tapped in a sweet feed from Wyatt Cameron feet out from the crease. His size, speed, and shot accuracy were as good as ever today – potting one in the shootout to put pressure on the Saints to score as well. Through the first 5 games, Fleece has 4 goals and 2 assists for 6 points.

2022 US NATIONALS QUARTER FINALS: PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE (0) VS SHATTUCK ST. MARY’S (4)
Masun Fleece, once again, had a strong game in the US Nationals, this time when it mattered most as today’s game was a quarter-final elimination game. Scoring the eventual game winner early in the first, he jumped on a rebound chance and showed good off-puck awareness as to where to be on the ice in the o-zone when he didn’t have possession. He had a few other chances in the game, releasing a powerful wrister on net, it was clear Fleece was beginning to heat up and get hungrier for offensive chances as the game went on. He also played a sound defensive game from the wing position, covering his man at the point well and playing an aggressive game, he forced a few bobbled pucks at the line, ultimately getting a zone exit for his team, easing the pressure off for a few moments.

2022 USA NATIONALS 14U GAME RECAP: GREEN BAY JR. GAMBLERS (2) VS SHATTUCK ST. MARY’S (3)
Scoring 2 goals in today’s game, Masun Fleece has now upped his point total to 3 goals, 2 assists for 5 points in 2 games. His scoring knack has been on full display the last 2 games, with a nose for the net and the speed and skill to finish he is a threat anytime he is in the offensive zone with the puck. His release is wicked, with a quick flick of the wrists he can shoot the puck in a fluid motion that generates lots of power without sacrificing accuracy. His motor seems to never run out, as on the forecheck even late in the game he’s seen pressing the Gamblers defenseman on the forecheck, quickly closing the gap between himself and the puck carrier before laying a heavy bodycheck to knock the puck free.

2022 USA NATIONALS 14U GAME RECAP: NASHVILLE JR PREDATORS (3) VS SHATTUCK ST. MARY’S (7)
Akin to the playstyle of William Belle, Masun Fleece also played a powerful game with the puck as he challenged defenders physically and applied pressure in all 3 zones. His presence in front of the net allowed him to score one goal in this game, beating out defenders for space and refusing to move once traffic came, he was the recipient of a rebound chance which he finished off with authority. His strength and puck protection ability when skating with the puck was one of his best qualities, he kept his feet moving and the puck away from pressure in safe areas which allowed him to connect on passes to teammates to keep play going without the risk of a turnover. Showing brief glimpses of high-end skill there were a few instances where he went through defenders with slick moves, but the majority of the time he kept his game simple which really helped his team get going after they were slightly shellshocked falling behind 2-0 early. He ended the game with 1 goal and 2 assists for an impressive 3 point showing.
