Ferry may not have put up flashy offensive numbers in this tournament, but he was an absolute force in his own end. He played with a physical edge, never hesitating to lay the body and stand opponents up at the blue line, making zone entries a nightmare for the opposition. His ability to box out in front of the net was just as effective, limiting second-chance opportunities and keeping opposing forwards to the outside. His physical dominance extended to board battles, where he consistently outmuscled opponents and made it difficult for them to escape with possession. In the offensive zone, his awareness and poise at the blue line stood out. He kept plays alive with smart positioning and showed solid puck-moving ability, including one impressive sequence where his skating allowed him to maintain possession before threading a crisp pass down low to a forward. While his contributions may not have been reflected on the scoresheet, Ferry had a strong tournament, proving to be a reliable and physical presence on the backend.

As a whole this team was very impressive and Nikolas Ferry was no exception. The Jr. Kings’ blue liner was a roadblock that opposing puck carriers had great difficulty avoiding. He was an extremely patient defender who did not dive in but instead sat back and kept his stick in passing lanes as he took away playmaking possibilities and isolated the puck carrier before stepping in to put an end to rush attempts. He was extremely quick on the draw with his poke checks and did well to knock the puck loose and come away with possession. His ability to stay tight to the man allowed him to quickly step in and make timely interventions by initiating puck battles where he found plenty of success by leveraging his size. He used his body extremely well in races for loose pucks by being aware of the attacker chasing the puck and positioning himself between the puck and the man and turning it into a physical contest for possession. He was quick to react to loose pucks around the net and bat them into the corners to alleviate pressure, and his swift passing to forwards did much of the same as he helped his team switch to offense. His defensive play was excellent and he was a huge reason that they were able to limit goal scoring chances against their opponents.

Nikolas Ferry is one of the defenders who made life so difficult for Royal Blue’s attackers. He was extremely effective in shutting down the opposition by showing patience and allowing the play to come to him and standing it up once they got in close enough to him. He didn’t dive in and bring himself out of position, instead following the play and maintaining a close gap that he was able to close down in the blink of an eye. He showed great hand-eye coordination with his ability to bat pucks down out of the air and make quick poke checks. He quickly gathered the puck and moved it up the boards and out of the zone without any trouble, and then showed some good acceleration to get up and join the attack as a late option entering the zone. His speed was useful in racing to the puck and once he got a step on his man he wedged his body in the way and began to box out the attackers and ensure he’d be first to the puck. Every decision he made was well calculated and his impact on the game continued to grow with each decision.

One of the smaller defensemen on this large blue line, the 6’0” Nikolas Ferry was a strong defensive presence who continually made key plays in this contest. His positioning was something I really admired, he shut down the center lane very well and was quick to react to plays around him to make several key interventions. He was strong in puck battles in the corner and around the net, tying up sticks effectively and winning the battle for positioning out front. His stick was first to the puck on a number of occasions and he was able to quickly clear rebounds and loose pucks away from the front of the net and into the corners away from danger. He made responsible decisions with the puck on his stick to move the puck out of the zone and up ice to alleviate the pressure. He reacted quickly to movements of the puck carrier and was able to step up physically and lay a hit to stop the play in its tracks. It was an extremely effective showing from Ferry and he did a great job preventing opportunities from turning into goals.

Nikolas might be a flashy offensively gifted defenseman but he played a big physical game. Using his body to slow down attackers, blocking passes and shots, his presence was undeniable on the ice. His ability to defend and utilize his stick prevented a goal on one play by blocking a shot into an empty net which gave his goalie time to move across the crease, ultimately stopping it from trickling across the goal line. This reliable and selfless defending was crucial for Kelly Green’s penalty kill which went 4/4.
