Playing his minor hockey in Alberta, I have seen a lot of Boyce over the years and have always liked his pace and ability to make plays in tight. After collecting 28 points in 29 games for Edge School in the CSSHL U17 ranks last season, Boyce will now ply his trade with the Okotoks Oilers this year. The jump from U17 hockey to junior can be a daunting one but I think Boyce has the attributes needed to handle the transition. Despite average size, he is a difficult player to lock down as he uses his quick hands to protect the puck and his sharp edgework to spin off contact. He carries the puck with his head up, making quick decisions to keep the play moving, and his small area instincts are well honed to prevent defences from collapsing on him. He is a thoughtful player with the puck, but at times he can be a little reactive in his positioning off puck. With more pre-possession work, he could give himself even more time to make plays. As the competition ramps up, I’ll be looking for him to find ways to put himself in better positions as an outlet option to better transition up ice offensively.
