EVENT 2026 OHL Draft Final Evaluation
Projection: Bottom Four Shut Down
Tools: Physicality, Defensive Positioning
Development Opportunities: Passing Decisions, Lateral Mobility
I've liked what I’ve seen from Nimchonok this season. It’s rarely anything flashy, but he brings a steady, dependable defensive presence that’s easy to see how it could add value to an OHL lineup. He’s eager to apply pressure, maintains a solid gap, and doesn't hesitate to lean into physical play to disrupt opponents' possessions. He moves reasonably well in his 6’2 201 lbs frame and can make a clean first pass, making for a projectable profile here for a roster piece.
There are moments where you see a bit more than a defensive profile. The execution may not always be perfect at times, but Jay can be assertive and confident with the puck, showcasing more layers to his game at times. Enhancing that side of things could make him a more impactful player, but with continued development to get quicker and more agile, I can easily see him filling a defensive leaning role on an OHL lineup.

EVENT Upper Canada College Spotlight
Nimchonok has grown on me a lot as the season has gone on. At first, I noticed the obvious physical attributes: 6’2 and a powerful skater with more than capable lateral mobility is an immediate check when getting to know a new group of players. The detail oriented defensive game and simple puck-moving layer were also obvious themes from the early days, and it all just made for a solid foundation of a player I thought could be worth keeping an eye on. As the season has gone on, I’ve seen more and more confidence from Jay, looking for chances to activate, jump in on the attack, and trying to make creative plays with the puck on his stick. Especially in the offensive zone, I’ve seen more and more ambition from him, trying to take over the flow of attacks, and chip in offensively for the Blues. This development has made for a change in my projection of his game, thus the recent high debut after his strong showing at the OHL Top Prospects Game back in January.

Game Information 2026 OHL Cup vs. Brantford
Jay Nimchonok is a right-shot defenceman who plays the game with a strong motor and is unafraid to activate, moving up ice to make plays. He has an intensity to his game, especially when he is in possession of the puck, pushing offence and playing a key role in transition, fighting through opposing players. He also uses this intensity to bring a physical element to the game, he is not afraid to throw around his body, engaging along the boards and getting involved.

Game Information 2025 Whitby Silver Stick Final vs. Honeybaked
I noticed Nimchonok frequently over the Silver Stick, and I thought the finals was his best performance. Jay was calm and patient on retrievals, consistently picking up dumped-in pucks, getting his head up and scanning for options. He almost always connected on clean exit passes to jumpstart the transition, bringing a solid puck-moving element to the Upper Canada back-end. Defensively, I thought he displayed sound gap control, effectively forcing attackers to the outside on entries and winning battles in his own end to secure possession. Both of these two areas made Jay a solid contributor for UCC, doing the little things right to help them exit their zone and get going the other direction.

Game Information Prep U16 vs Hill Academy
Nimchonok was the defender I noticed the most on the Upper Canada squad. He always seemed to want to engage defensively, get in attackers’ space and didn’t hesitate from applying contact. He won quite a few pucks in his defensive zone, winning battles in his corners, and he brought a solid defensive effort in a game where Hill controlled most of the game. Jay connected on most of his outlet passes, overall making for a solid showing as a defender who could win pucks and get them up ice with control.
