EVENT 2026 OHL Draft Final Evaluation
Projection: Top Pair Upside
Strengths: Skating Mechanics, Puck Handling, Confidence
Development Opportunities: Activation Decisions, Defensive Details, Strength
When Matheson is on his game, he is one of the most exciting defenders to watch in this class. His ability to shift direction, pivot, and turn without losing any momentum while handling the puck seamlessly has been genuinely impressive. In terms of raw mechanics, there isn’t much he can’t do, and it all gives him the tools to evade forecheckers, problem solve his way out of danger, and be a confident puck handler all over the ice. Lucas never backs down from an opportunity to flex those skills, often leading the charge for the Barrie Colts, sparking clean transitions, and generating chances through sheer ambition and ability. Especially when quarterbacking a power play, you routinely see him take over sequences and create from the top of the zone, beating forwards with a little shimmy and attacking scoring areas with confidence.
The flip side is that the execution can be inconsistent, particularly against tougher opposition where he’ll skate into pressure or force a pass that isn’t there. Learning when to keep things simple and pick his spots to activate is one of my keys for him moving forward. I love the confidence and ambition and I don’t want to discourage that brand of play, just a bit of re-calibrating the risk/reward calculation to limit the occasional mishaps. The package of skills is at the top of the defence class, and I think there is real promise here for him to develop into a premier offensive defender at the OHL level.

Game Information 2025 Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic vs. London
The cream of the crop for the Barrie Colts, right-shot defender Lucas Matheson is a big driver for his team. He was consistently activating, moving up on the rush and using his feet to aid in transition. He also showed the awareness to move back on defence when needed and has the skillset to move the puck and facilitate inside the offensive end from the blueline. Defensively, he showed a tendency to engage with opposing players and try to free pucks with his stick and body. He did not factor into the score but he was a main player for his Colts team.

Game Information 2025 Whitby Silver Stick vs. Senators
Matheson was up to his usual tricks, playing a confident, mobile and skilled game to take over in moments in this tough matchup. As always, I came away impressed with his puck skills and composure under pressure. Lucas consistently retrieved pucks in the defensive zone and transitioned the Colts up ice with control, showcasing excellent evasion ability to slip past forecheckers. Throughout the game, I noticed his calm decision-making with the puck on his stick, connecting on pass after pass to safely transition pucks up ice. It wasn’t as high of a volume as a typical viewing, but he was active in the offensive zone, walking the line effectively and using deception at the point to create shooting lanes. None of this was anything new from Matheson, but yet another positive viewing from the Colts blueliner.

Game Information 2025 Toronto Titans Tournament
Matheson caught my eye in some U15 views from the OHFs, so I was already a bit familiar with his game, and I was really impressed with how he looked here. The package of offensive creativity, mobility, and puckhandling really came together to make for a strong showing. Within the offensive zone, I could always see the wheels turning, seeing what he was trying to do and that he was always looking to make something happen. Even if a forechecker was trying to close him down at the point, he had more than enough fakes and shifty skating moves up his sleeve to skirt around them, walk the line, and create a lane to get something toward the net. Lucas found the back of the net in this one after walking the line and firing one from the middle lane and also added an assist with an assertive carry into the offensive zone and slip pass to the slot. We’ll see how subsequent viewings of the Colts go, but I was really impressed with Lucas’ game and someone well on my radar to consider for inclusion on my rankings.
