EVENT 2026 OHL Draft Final Evaluation
Projection: Second Pair Shut Down
Tools: Defensive Stops, Engagement, Long Reach
Development Opportunities: Passing Under Pressure, Strength
In terms of defensive value, Roche is at the top of this class. He is a big, rangy defender who uses his long reach and mobile frame to be a suffocating defensive presence. Shane is incredibly eager to apply pressure, defends entries well, and is always looking to step up in the neutral zone to disrupt transitions. He contests possessions constantly and more often than not comes out on the winning end of 50/50 battles to secure play for the Marlboros. The skating and mobility in his 6'3 frame is solid, using long strides to cover tons of ice with the lateral footwork to maintain gaps and close down space. The disruption is the calling card, but there is enough puck moving ability to keep things controlled and get his team moving in the right direction.
This all makes for a pretty seamless projection to a reliable second pair defender who is a shutdown presence. The reach, size, and defensive instincts will translate well to the junior game and are what will land him a job at the OHL level. It may not be the most offensive profile in this range, but he should be a solid and trusted addition to any roster.

Game Information 2025 Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic Final
I’ve noted Roche all year for his defensive game, and while there was some of that in the final I thought he showed a bit more confidence to handle the puck and evade pressure. He was confident and patient with the puck, taking his time to process his options and didn’t panic when faced with the pressure of a forechecker. Shane had a few moments of rushing pucks up ice for entries and all in all had more impact as a puck handler which was great to see. He won his usual fair share of pucks and stopped rushes, and I liked seeing a bit more of the confidence to make plays in this game.

Game Information 2025 Whitby Silver Stick vs. DLC
It was a tough game for the Marlboros as a whole, but I saw enough positives from Roche to make him worth mentioning. He showed his rangy, disruptive defensive ability to shut plays down. He utilized his reach effectively to neutralize transitions in the center of the ice, connect on stick checks, and passes. It was evidently a lopsided affair and wasn’t his best performance, but even in a game where his team spent most of the time on their heels, I still saw flashes of his ability to take away time and space that I have noted all year long.

Game Information 2025 Whitby Silver Stick vs. HPL
Shane Roche showed signs of a smart two-way defenceman. He was getting himself open as a shooting option inside the opposing end while scanning the ice and reading play well and moving back in time to be a solid defensive presence. He kept an active stick and was able to engage in net front battles, protecting the slot for his team. On the powerplay, he was moving the puck well and was able to get open for a one-timer, after attempting he was able to get a feed from Miles Reilly, settling the puck and scoring the go ahead 3-2 goal.

Game Information GTHL U16: October Evaluations
Another solid performance from Roche, showing strong defensive instincts to win possession. He was active in defensive scenarios, applying pressure, jumping passes, and just being difficult for his opponents to navigate around. Shane used his reach and stick well to take away lanes, free up pucks, and add value on the defensive side of the puck. It wasn’t flashy, but he broke up play after play and was crucial to helping the Marlboros stay out of their zone in this one.

Game Information 2025 Toronto Titans Tournament
Roche played a well-rounded game, showing bits and pieces of different elements through my viewings. The most prevalent theme in my notes was how he defended, using his reach and frame to his advantage. Whether it was jumping a pass, taking away space, or using his stick to free up pucks, it all revolved around his physical tools. There was a constant willingness to engage, rarely conceding space, and always trying to get in attackers’ space and force turnovers. The physical tools and skating were obvious early on in my views over the Titans Tournament, and add in the solid puck-moving and a few flashes here and there of offensive creation, and it all made for a solid performance from the Marlboros defender.

I mainly noted Roche for his physical tools and how he leveraged them. Of course, he is a bigger defender, and I thought he moved around the ice relatively well all things considered. He was aggressive in defensive situations, looking to knock defenders off pucks, relying on both his strength and long reach to disrupt oncoming threats and win back possession. Shane showed himself to be a more than capable puck-mover, frequently connecting on his outlet passes, offering an all-around reliable presence on the Majors’ blueline. Like a few other defenders featured in this write-up, it wasn’t anything that jumped off the page, but a lot of “simple” details to Roche’s game that made his performance noteworthy.
