As we’ve become even more familiar with Paul’s game throughout the tournament, it’s become clear that skill and ruggedness are at the core of his game. Throughout this contest it was no different, however, I did feel that his application of both elements was far more effective throughout. Paul used his strength to maintain body position in puck battles against larger opponents and his puck skill to subsequently maneuver and guide the puck out of congestion. Additionally, I found that whether a factor of growing chemistry or effective instruction, Paul’s awareness of his surroundings was greater, enabling more timely passing to a speedy or circulating linemate as opposed to allowing for turnovers that may have occurred earlier in the event. He had a handful of high quality scoring changes as a result of skillful puck control. He was great at creating space for himself on the rush by using the boards and making quick burst strides to recover loose pucks.

Kilfoil and Paul were the main drivers of offence for New Brunswick in this matchup. Paul complemented Kilfoil well. He always seemed to be in the right place where Kilfoil could hit him for a pass that led to quality chances. Paul tallied one of a Kilfoil pass but could have had plenty more. Some nifty passing combination plays between the duo caused fits for the opposition as the puck moved quicker than they could react. Landon showed great hands in small areas, frequently protecting the puck from defenders along the wall or in the corner. From this wall position, he didn’t hesitate to jump off the wall and drive toward the net for a shot attempt.

While I’ve otherwise felt a bit critical of Landon Paul’s puck carrying tendencies in this game, its tough to deny how his combination of skill and physicality can impact a game. Midway through the second period, Paul battled fervently with Manitoba’s Kaeson Fisher along the boards in transition, ultimately winning the puck off of the wall, carrying it slightly deeper into the offensive zone and then feeding it to a streaking Zachary Bourdreau for the 1-1 tying goal of the game.
