Varga’s skillset an overall confidence with the puck on his stick was on full display throughout the duration of this game. He’s able to make quick maneuvers with the puck at high speeds, which made him a lethal puck carrier through the neutral zone in this contest. He had a beautiful assist in the second period when he received a puck in the offensive zone, pulled the puck around a couple of defenders before executing a perfect backhand pass for a backdoor tap in. He scored his teams sixth goal of the game off an impressive rush when he came down the wing with speed and fired a perfect shot in stride over the blocker.

A bit of a quiet game by his standards given how impactful he was on their journey to the championship game, but Kalder Varga was still solid and came away with an assist on Garcia’s goal. He played well and was getting some good chances here and there, but his passing was very nice as his line of him, Garcia, and Kuzma were buzzing all day creating chances for one another. He did a nice job finding some passing seams to the middle of the ice from along the boards, and he sprung Garcia for a 2 on 1 with a nice stretch pass late in the third. He nearly had a goal at the end of the second period with an excellent hustle play to hunt down a loose puck, body the defender to get attacking position, and get a shot away that forced a tough save from the goalie. This was maybe a bit of a subdued performance but his contributions all tournament long were immeasurable.

Kalder Varga continued his strong tournament with another impactful performance against New Jersey in this one. From the onset I could tell he would be a difference maker, he was handling the puck very smoothly and was dancing away from the defensive sticks and opening himself up in the offensive zone to give himself endless passing options. He had a commanding presence on the puck and was darting at the defense looking to create something out of nothing at times, finding openings in the defense and getting himself some dangerous shooting opportunities. On the shift following the opening goal he did well to get into the slot, receive the puck out of the air, and fire it into the back of the net, showing off his hand eye coordination and athleticism as he doubled his team’s lead. He was very important in possessing the puck as he used his edgework well to maintain some separation from the defense and he patiently held onto the puck as he scanned the passing options.

I had a tough time picking the player of the game in this one because of how difficult Kalder Varga made it for me. He was excellent, he really grew into this game and by the end of it he had absolutely asserted himself as one of the players that I was certain would be responsible for closing out the game. From the second period on he was absolutely buzzing and looking to create chances, lurking behind the net and feeding the puck into the slot trying to tee up one timers from in close. His vision was on full display and he was persistent in his distribution attempts, quickly getting back on the puck and making play after play to help his team get back into the game. He took the lead for his side at the start of the second period, but the bigger of his two goals was the one that forced overtime as he redirected it in from the back post. He was getting into dangerous areas, keeping his head up, and pushing the pace time and time again in the overtime period. It took a period for the team to wake up, but once they did Kalder Varga made it his mission to turn his team’s fortunes around.

Varga’s line with Aurelio Garcia and Gordon-Carroll was dominant today. I thought Kalder really carried a lot of the play and had many standout efforts to show for it. On the 4-1 goal, Varga spun out of the corner and threw a behind the back pass right on his teammates tape for a tap-in. Dynamic plays like that sink the opposing teams’ sails, and so that play stood out for me. Varga was also a beast on entries today. He used a lot of deception to shift rush defenders, and open clear paths to the offensive zone. Once the zone was gained, Varga’s wizardry took over, and your guess is as good as mine as to where he was distributing that puck.
