Thursday marked the first day of the NCAA recruiting window for rising high school juniors, who can now officially receive verbal offers. Plenty can change between now and the time these players enroll, but day one gave a good look at where some of the top-end 2007 and 2008-born talent will suit up in college.

36 players verbally committed on Thursday, 12 more than 2023 total of 24. Of those, Boston College led the way with four commits, followed by Providence, Michigan State and UMass, each with three.

Despite receiving just one commitment on day one, Michigan sits atop PuckPreps’ 2008 Team Rankings thanks to early commits from the No. 4 and No. 60 skaters, Adam Valentini and Noah Kosick. BC is on the Wolverines' heels, followed by Boston University and Providence.

Players are listed below in order of commitment.

Kevin Lysohir, forward - Quinnipiac

Lysohir was the first player to announce his commitment early Thursday morning. The 5-foot, 8-inch forward is the third Long Island Gull to commit to Quinnipiac in the past year, joining 2007s Ethan Wyttenbach and Nicholas Sykora. He finished third on the Gulls’ 15U team in 2023-24, posting 86 points in 80 games.

Roberts Naudins - Harvard

Unlike 2023, where the Crimson landed three commits on day one, Naudins is their lone get this Aug. 1, and a big one (literally) at that. He’s a 6-foot, 5-inch right shot forward from Latvia, whose USHL rights are held by Muskegon.

Parker Trottier, forward - Notre Dame

The grandson of Hockey Hall of Famer Bryan Trottier, Parker is the No. 11 skater in PuckPreps’ 2008 rankings. A Shattuck St. Mary’s product, he tallied 26 points in 46 games this past season. He’ll join the USNTDP this fall.

Jason Musa, forward - UMass

UMass was the logical choice for the 2007-born Musa. His two brothers — Jack and Joey — both currently play for the Minutemen. Jason split last season between Trinity-Pawling School and the Hartford Wolfpack 16U AAA. For the latter he posted 70 points in just 24 games last season.

Jimmy Rieber, defenseman - Miami

The first of two Aug. 1 pickups for the RedHawks, Rieber hails from Minnesota but has played AAA with the Chicago Reapers for the past four seasons. He was solid through three zones for Team Gold in July’s U.S. 16 Development Camp. Waterloo holds his USHL rights.

Nolan Duskocy, forward - UMass

Duskocy was a standout at last month’s U.S. 16 Development Camp, leading Team Columbia with five goals and nine points in six games. A Bishop Kearney Selects product and draft pick of USHL’s Tri-City Storm, the Connecticut native is PuckPreps No. 144 2008-born skater.

Mclean Agrette, forward - UMass

Agrette is a late 2007-born Canadian forward headed to South Kent School by way of Nichols School this fall. He was well over a point per game at the 16U and prep levels with the Vikings this season.

Sean Burick, defenseman - Denver

A tall, skilled defenseman from California that comes to Denver via Shattuck St. Mary’s? Recent history suggests that works out well. Burick, while an unpolished skater, brings both size and skill to the Pioneers blue line. He stands 6-feet, 6-inches and is ranked No. 280 by PuckPreps among 2008-born skaters.

Luke Schairer, defenseman - Boston University

Long rumored to be connected to BU, the Mount St. Charles defenseman Schairer made it official Thursday. A Wisconsin native who has spent time with programs in North Carolina, Schairer totaled 41 points in 52 games in his first and only year with the Mounties. He’ll join the USNTDP this season.

Dylan Dean, forward - Maine

Another Long Island Gull off the board, Dean is Maine’s sole day one commit. Born in Minnesota playing on the east coast the past two seasons, Dean’s 6-foot, 1-inch frame and scoring ability landed him No. 183 on PuckPreps rankings among 2008-born skaters and likewise in the sights of the Black Bears.

Brody George, forward - Michigan State

A 5-foot, 9-inch left shot forward, George dominated the 13U, 14U and 15U levels with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite and will now take his talents to the USNTDP before eventually joining the Spartans. He’s PuckPreps No. 146 2008-born skater.

Chase Reid, defenseman - Michigan State

Reid is a late 2007 birth year and product of Michigan’s Honeybaked and Victory Honda programs, the latter of which he tallied 66 points in 80 games for at the 16U level last season. PuckPreps’ No. 180 2007-born skater, Reid will play for USHL Waterloo this season.

Zachary Nyman, defenseman - Michigan

Perhaps the biggest day one commitment is Michigan’s only get on the day. Nyman is PuckPreps’ No. 7 2008-born skater and No. 2 defenseman. He’ll play for the BCHL’s Penticton Vees this season, coming off a 55-point-in-68-game campaign with the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA.

Jonas Kemps, defenseman - Michigan State

The final of three commitments in a wildly successful day one for Michigan State is Jonas Kemps. The Calafornian is PuckPreps No. 34 2008-born defenseman, posting 46 points in 73 games with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 15U AAA last season. Kemps will join George with the USNTDP this season.

Ben Short, forward - Merrimack

Merrimack grabs a local recruit in Short, whose hometown of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, is just 40 miles from the Warriors’ campus in North Andover. Short split last season between the Assabet Valley Patriots 15U AAA and The Winchendon School. He’s expected to suit up for the Islanders Hockey Club Prep East — which plays out of Merrimack’s arena — this season.

Nathan Birch, defenseman - Northeastern

Birch, Northeastern’s lone Aug. 1 commit, was an offensive force with Bishop’s College School varsity last season. The 5-foot, 9-inch Canadian defenseman tallied 68 points in 82 games. Cedar Rapids holds his USHL rights.

Callum Croskery, defenseman - Boston College

One of two big day one commitments for BC, Croskery is PuckPreps’ No. 8 2008-born defenseman. One of the few Canadians at his position to opt for the NCAA, he brings an offensive firepower fit for the Eagles’ offense. Croskery averaged nearly two points per game (52 in 29) from the blue line with the Oakville Rangers 16U AAA last season. He’s tendered by USHL Chicago for this season.

Ilya Morozov, forward - Miami

A native Russian who exploded for 74 points in 49 with the Windy City Storm 15U AAA last season, Morozov commits to Miami under new head coach Anthony Noreen, who tendered him in his previous job with the USHL’s Tri City Storm in December.

Van Martin, forward - St. Lawrence

A late 2007-born forward, Martin is staying on the east coast with his commitment. Hailing from New Hampshire, he’s spent the past two seasons with Lovell Academy in Massachusetts and will head to upstate New York to join St. Lawrence.

Tynan Lawrence, forward - BU

Once the top prospect for this spring’s QMJHL draft, Lawrence’s stock dropped after he was tendered by USHL Muskegon in February, signaling he was heading to the NCAA. The Fredericton, New Brunswick, native chose between blue bloods, taking unofficial visits to Boston University, Boston College and North Dakota earlier this year before ultimately deciding on the Terriers.

Blake Zielinski, forward - Providence

Providence has long been the front runner for Zielinski, who told PuckPreps he could “see myself playing there” since his visit on a gameday against BU this spring. A New Jersey native, Zielinski visited Quinnipiac on July 31 and also received significant interest from Penn State and BU. He’ll suit up for the North Jersey Avalanche 16U this season.

Bode Laylin, defenseman - St. Thomas

Shockingly, Laylin commits to St. Thomas, where his brothers Luc and Casy are rostered and his father Cory is an assistant coach. The 2007-born defenseman notched 43 points in 49 games for Northstar Christian Academy 16U AAA before suiting up for nine games with the USHL’s Tri City Storm at the end of last season.

Dain Gordon, forward - Colorado College

A native Coloradan who has spent the past three two seasons with Bishop Kearney Selects, Gordon committed close to home. He led BK 15U with 81 points in 69 games this season and is PuckPreps’ No. 148 2008-born skater.

Rudolfs Berzkalns, forward - Boston College

Berzkalns is a 6-foot Latvian forward who moved to the U.S. three years ago to join Bishop Kearney Selects. He’s shined the past two seasons for BK, sitting above a point per game over 134 games at the 14U and 15U levels. Berzkalns is tendered by USHL Muskegon for this season.

Jake Tavares, forward - Dartmouth

PuckPreps’ No. 204 2007-born skater, Tavares brings his 6-foot frame and high motor to a Dartmouth program that leans on size and effort. He had 30 points in 31 games for Belmont Hill School last season.

Casey Mutryn, forward - Boston College

Born in Norwell, Massachusetts, played prep for St. Sebastian’s School and now committed to BC. It doesn’t get much more Boston than Casey Mutryn. The top-ranked 2008-born New England native (No. 34 overall in PuckPreps’ rankings), is maybe the biggest highlight of a successful opening day for the Eagles. He had 42 points in 27 games for St. Sebs last season and will join the USNTDP this fall. Mutryn’s brother Teddy (2007) is also committed to BC.

Jude Bray, defenseman - Penn State

Penn State got on the board with Bray, a 3.5-star Canadian defenseman ranked No. 168 by PuckPreps among 2008-born skaters. He tallied 42 points in 57 games for the Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA last season and will make the jump to the BCHL with the Sherwood Park Crusaders this fall. Waterloo holds Bray’s USHL rights.

Quinlan Clair, defenseman - Niagara

It’s unusual for an Atlantic Hockey program to get into the fray this early in the recruiting window, but the Purple Eagles’ staff had plenty of opportunity to see Clair last season. The 2007-born Canadian played down the road at Nichols School in Buffalo, recording 28 points in 63 games.

Alexander Carmanov, defenseman - Penn State

Listed at 6-foot, 11-inches and 251 pounds, Carmanov would be both the tallest and heaviest player in college hockey today. He’s 16 years old.

The defenseman, who was born in Moldova, split time between the Russian and Belarusian U16 and U18 leagues last season. Carmanov will join the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Knights program in the U.S. this season.

Dominic Pajkic, defenseman - Western Michigan

The lone American defenseman among the top 10 at the position in PuckPreps’ 2008 rankings, Pajkic is another mobile, offensively gifted blueliner to come out of Shattuck St. Mary’s. Originally from the Detroit suburb of St. Clair Shores, he’ll be under three hours from home with the Broncos.

William Bent, forward - Providence

A New Englander who has spent the last three seasons with Mount St. Charles, Bent’s future college is just 12 miles down Route 146 from Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Harvard was rumored to have significant interest in the 6-foot, 1-inch forward who had 93 points in 58 games last season, but the Friars commit PuckPreps’ No. 179 2008-born skater.

Zachary Roussy, defenseman - Providence

Continuing its strong start to the recruiting window, Providence commits the 6-foot Canadian defenseman Roussy. PuckPreps’ No. 253 2008-born skater, he tallied 64 points split between Bishop’s College U16, U17 and varsity last season.

Chase Trompeter, forward - Western Michigan

An undersized, skilled forward from Missouri, Trompeter is PuckPreps’ No. 295 2008-born skater. He was among the top scorers for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 15U last season, tallying 74 in 57 games. He’ll join the St. Louis AAA Blues this season. Green Bay holds his USHL rights.

Evan Jones, defenseman - Dartmouth

A 2007-born defenseman who averaged a point per game for the Massachusetts District at last month’s U.S. 17 National Festival, Jones will stay in New England, committing to up and coming Dartmouth.

Cameron Chartrand, defenseman - Boston College

BC gets their second day-one commitment from a highly sought after Canadian defenseman, joining Ontario’s Callum Croskery in Chestnut Hill. A Quebecois playing in the U.S. for Bishop Kearney Selects, Chartrand tallied 33 points in 61 games this past season. Cedar Rapids holds his USHL rights.

Camden Tabb, forward - American International

The third Mount St. Charles product to commit on Thursday, Tabb stays close to home with a commitment to AIC. He posted 15 points in 43 games for the Mounties last season. The Boston Jr. Bruins hold his NCDC rights.
