Tied with Park for second in points on Team Gold with 6 in 4 games, Whang was a constant contributor of offence for his team using both his vision and strong puck carrying abilities to set up chance after chance for his teammates. He could attack defences in many ways whether it was driving into the zone with speed, controlling play along the perimeter and feeding open teammates in the slot or springing teammates up the ice in transition, his overall skillset made him such an effective play driver and chance creator. It seemed like he was consistently finding ways to find open teammates on the ice when he had the puck on his stick and brought the same energy to every shift and every game, acting as a sort of spark for the team when they weren’t clicking on offence. He made his way into multiple game reports as a standout performer with a string of strong performances at this camp and I’m intrigued to see if he will bring this momentum with him into the upcoming season.

The combination of pace and vision that Whang displayed in this game allowed him to create some of his team’s most dangerous chances. He made a great play on the penalty kill to win a puck battle and then take off for a shorthanded breakaway where he made a move to his forehand that was ultimately denied by the goaltender. All throughout, he was using his skating to create offence whether that was making quick cuts into the middle of the ice as the puck carrier or finding his teammates in dangerous scoring positions with well-timed passes from the perimeter of the offensive zone.

Whang was a dangerous forward in transition for Team Gold with his heads up plays and quick reads with the puck that created quality scoring chances and led to a few goals for his team. Whang displayed a lot of patience with the puck off the rush especially on the second goal of the game after extending the puck to his side on the offensive zone entry, swinging around the net and firing a quick turnaround snipe from the left circle into the top of the net. He would pick up an assist later in the game off another rush chance where he quickly stopped up on the defender and fed a pass through a tight seam to Park who found himself alone in the slot and made no mistake. It felt like all throughout the game he was able to spot open teammates off the rush with very quick and creative passes to generate high quality scoring chances.

The high volume of scoring chances from around the net made Whang an automatic stand out performer in this game. From puck drop, it seemed as if he a constant creator of offence through an early odd-man rush opportunity to getting an open look from the high slot and right after, the use of a drag technique to pull the puck around a sprawling defender and get another few chances alone in front. Even with all the early chance creation, he only managed to help get his team on the board with an assist off a nice pass from blue line to blue line to hit Abolenskiy in stride for a breakaway, cutting the Navy Blue lead to 3-1. I thought his puck skills and quick processing speed were some of his greatest assets that allowed him to be involved so heavily in the Team Gold offence.

I thought Whang was very good at creating chances for his team in this game off quick give-and-go plays where he showed his creative playmaking ability. There were a few moments in the game where Whang showed exceptional awareness on the ice, knowing exactly where his teammates were and sending some sweet no-look passes right onto the tape that caught opponents off guard. I liked his patience with the puck, he was able to outwait opponents by stretching the puck out to his side while looking for lanes to open up and was able to make some nice plays off the rush and around the net by finding ways to slip passes through opponent’s sticks.
