Despite being held off the scoresheet throughout the entirety of the event, I thought Blake was able to flash his high-end offensive traits for me to envision the type of player he could be at the next level. He possesses a powerful skating stride, which allows him to be an effective puck carrier through the neutral zone and gain the zone more often than not. I liked the way he was able to change gears when attacking off the rush, often speeding up or slowing down to catch defenders off guard and beat them in a myriad of ways. He uses his frame effectively to protect the puck in the offensive zone as well, which allows him to prolong his possession time and circle the offensive zone. There are still some tunnel vision issues, as he often looks off his teammates and tries to generate chances individually, sometimes to his detriment. This has been a persistent problem for Blake when he plays with his Atlantic teammates, and something that needs to shore up in his game if he’s going to be successful at the next level.

This was Blake’s best showing at this event by a fair margin. He was demanding the puck a bit more, often choosing to try and carry play into the offensive zone and try to leverage his skill level to make something happen. He was pretty difficult to contain when attacking off the rush in one on one situations, showing the ability to either beat defenders wide with speed or use his hands to cut around them to the inside and get a quick shot off. Blake was quite difficult to knock off the puck in the offensive zone, as more than once in this game he was able to circle the offensive zone multiple times, shrugging off defenders and waiting for lanes to open up to make a play.

Blake is making a case to see a serious rise in our 2024 QMJHL Draft rankings with his play at this event. The little details in his game are starting to become more noticeable on a game by game basis, making his projection to the next level a little easier. He was making quick one touch plays in the neutral zone that allowed teammates to skate into the puck and enter the zone with speed. When his team lost possession in the offensive zone he was doing a great job at backtracking on pucks in order to strip opposing players and regain possession. His skill level was on full display throughout this game as well, showing confidence in his puck-carrying and executing an array of hook, slip and behind the back passes off the rush. It’ll be interesting to see if Blake can continue to keep stringing along performances like these as the tournament progresses.

I wasn’t too impressed with his first period despite his goal and assist, but over the ensuing two periods Caylen Blake showed me that this was his game and he was going to be the x-factor. His first goal was a perfect shot from along the boards on his off wing that snuck in under the bar at the front post catching the goalie a bit off guard. He earned an assist with a heads up play upon coming out of the box to send Chance Adams in on a breakaway. Blake used his speed extremely well and was able to drive the defense back and gain control of the offensive zone or to separate himself from the opposition and get on the end of a pass to get a shot off. He was following up plays well and scored a rebound goal after putting himself in the right place to capitalize on it. He showed some very slick hands in tight that nearly resulted in his hat trick but he flipped it up onto the crossbar, but his confidence was clear as he was driving to the net and taking players on. He ultimately got his hat trick and capped off an excellent first game as his team looks to make a deep run in Fargo.
