I think Dayne is one of the players in the draft where his adjustments on the fly show off the puck control he has and how his reaction timing and processing are up there with some of the best in the draft. He’s still certainly lighter than others but still manages to build breakaway speed through his crossovers and strides. I’ve seen him push for open ice and slash back into the high slot too when pressure arrives. He’s a C who plays the point on the PP for Humboldt and that’s always made me want to see him have more time shooting from the half wall. He’s got an accurate and deceptive release. I think the best part of Dayne is the level of diversity in his play style. He can burn you off the rush sometimes or he can curl back off an entry and look to facilitate the middle. He’s a mixed bag of high-end skills, untapped potential, and still someone who may not understand just how much he could dominate shift to shift.

I think this really reminded folks how early in his physical development he still is as a prospect. At 5’8, 130lbs, Dayne isn’t exactly bodying players off pucks or bulldozing his way through heavy traffic. He found spots to really use his foot speed to build power in straight lines on zone entries as he’s only slightly behind Mathis Preston in that regard as far as potential. He has those quick twitch elements in tight spaces too and showed that twice off the rush by shooting far side top corner against BWC and then deking forehand-backhand and elevating it over the outstretched goaltender. I understand why Dayne is running the PP from the point as far as a team tactical strategy but as a person wanting him to develop translatable skills I’d much rather see him learning to curl off the halfwall and shoot from there. That is what he’s most likely going to be doing at the next level anyways. He’s a top-10 player in this draft for me and some certainly see him as a top-5 player.

I think lots of folks were waiting for that elite gear that they know does exist from Dayne Beuker and I felt we got to see that in the game against BWC. His level of foot speed and explosion off the rush while in control to snap a shot far side top corner only really exists in a few players in this draft. That speed and puck control combination is certainly extremely fun.

I started to get very picky with my thoughts about Dayne, which scouts will begin to be when deciding just how high he will end up on their draft day lists. As someone who easily projects as a first-round player, that's how you gotta start assessing him. When he is attacking either off the rush or off a curl from the half-wall, he has poise, control, fast cuts, and always has his head up to assess the situations. He understands the flow of play, how to get guys to move laterally, and loves to move right and shoot back left. In this draft, I think he’s probably one of the players you’d absolutely hate to see on a breakaway if you were a goaltender. The thing to watch for me are his habits without the puck. I think there are some things to work on there to make him more active and dangerous in all situations. I’d also really like to see how he looks attacking from the half-wall on the PP too instead of at the point. I imagine they use him there because he’s got great passing vision and can see shot angles but it isn’t something he will do at the next levels.

Dayne is another one of the high-end right-shot players available for this next season. He seems like quite the powerful player in his motions while showing off his outside edges and cuts. You can tell right away while watching him that he’s a more advanced skater. Some moments when I watched he just took off like a train. Dayne was already throwing in shoulder checks, fakes, and cuts to his backhand away from pressure well. I thought for someone who was moving with power and straight line speed, Dayne was probably one of the best I’d seen from Saskatchewan players so far. I will be watching more this upcoming season on how he uses changes of pace and small ice tactics because it certainly shows it could be part of his game.

While I don’t think it all came together for Beuker in this one, there were a few moments that really caught my eye and made me think he just might have one of the higher ceilings among the American forwards. The way he was able to use deceptive head fakes to open up both passing and skating lanes for himself helped him create opportunities that largely weren’t there for a majority of his teammates and allowed him to gain access to the middle of the ice whenever he applied it. He had a good sequence early in the first when he was able to chip a puck past a defender in the neutral zone and retrieve it in the offensive zone before executing a backhand feed to the middle of the ice to a teammate in stride. I thought Beuker flashed some off-puck intelligence in the offensive zone as well by taking good routes to the front of the net to arrive just as a loose puck popped out to earn himself some looks from in tight.

Another standout performance from Beuker who I think is establishing himself as possibly the best forward prospect at this tournament. He such a diverse offensive talent with the capacity to beat you in a myriad of ways and more importantly the intelligence to know what is needed when. For a player with the tools he has available he is incredibly patient and takes what is given as opposed to forcing low percentage plays. He scored Saskatchewan’s second goal with an absolute laser beam and was threatening on every shift. His line was the only one with sustained pushback against the Albertans.

Being able to receive the puck in traffic and instantly adapt to make his opponents miss was a key strength of Beuker's in this game, which enabled him to generate a number of scoring opportunities. He was quick to recognize passing opportunities on the fly, rarely being caught off guard by a good opportunity to create misdirection or otherwise force opponents to move and adapt to the attack. His posture while carrying the puck in transition is inherently deceptive, as he often holds the puck off to his side, and scans his surroundings, It gives the natural impression that Dayne intends to pass the puck off of his forehand, but he showed in this game that from such a posture he was also capable of making a variety of plays such as cutting to the other side of his body and retaining possession for an indirect play to the net. The bottom line with Dayne was that he thinks and acts rapidly in ways that are unpredictable for his opponents leaving him seldom left without an outlet of some kind. Beyond the simplicity of his continual awareness, Beuker strategically moves his entire body, not only the puck as so many players do, in order to open passing lanes on the move. Anticipating the game at this speed is a special characteristic that I feel should not be undervalued.

It was a little bit of a slow start out of the gates for Dayne Beuker, but by the time the second half rolled around it looked like he was ready to kick it into gear. He did have a very nice defensive play in the opening half as he hustled back to help out on a 2 on 1 as his defenseman committed to the puck carrier exposing the second man, Beuker hunted the play down and intercepted the pass to prevent a breakaway opportunity. From the first shift of the second half he took things to a new level as he tried to take on two players at the blue line and work his way into the slot. He pressured the puck well in the attacking zone as he used his speed to quickly close down the opposition and then engaged physically down low before peeling away with the puck on his stick. He wanted the puck on his stick and went high to low looking for passing lanes to the slot, and then would go around the net and go low to high to continue searching if he didn’t find anything the first time around - he was more than happy to have the puck on his stick. He has a very good shot and he used the bodies out front so well to disguise his quick release and make the most of the screens. He could have easily come away with a hat trick in this contest as he hit the iron a couple of times and had another shot narrowly miss wide of the net. He stood out as an intelligent player with tremendous ability after his reserved performance in the first half, he will be a joy to watch moving forward and if he can apply that same level of intensity across the full game then he’s going to be really tough for opposing teams to keep in check.

With two goals on the day, Dayne is one of the best at shifting with power laterally and exploding into open space to find shooting spots with and without the puck. He can shift into the high slot with intensity and use those crossovers and cuts to slice. The way he can stickhandle quickly through defenders in moments is very impressive. He’s the kind of player who can open up space for himself so fast and blast through layers in the neutral zone if he’s keen to. His first goal was just walking into the slot and picking up a loose puck. His second was much the same as he received a gorgeous no-look pass from behind the net.
