2023 HLINKA GRETZKY CUP: CANADA VS FINLAND
For my money, Peyton was Canada’s best defenseman in this game. Showed dynamic qualities moving the puck and contributing offensively and was extremely poised defensively. When support was there, Peyton played an aggressive physical brand of hockey doing an exceptional job of separating the player from the puck. On retrievals he was calm and was able to settle the puck and make a great first pass out of the zone. On the 3-2 go ahead goal for Canada, Peyton came out of the corner and feathered a beautiful backhand pass cross-ice over to Ryan Roobroeck.

2023 Canada Winter Games Report: Team Manitoba (4) vs Team Quebec (6)
It didn’t take me very long to take note of Peyton Kettles in this one. Standing at 6’5, 176lbs, and shoots right; this player has the potential to become a stud. Not only does he own great size, but he can move with it which is the most important part of it all. Very strong 4-way mobility, he’s very fluid on his feet and can change directions in a pinch both with the puck and without. He did a great job at defending the rush against the speedy puck carriers on Team Quebec, part in parcel due to his long reach but more-so thanks to his ability to match pace and give up very little to the inside. He also had some nice flashes of transitional play with the puck, taking it from his own defensive end and into the offensive zone, he showed off some smooth hands along with underrated speed in his forward stride. There were a few gaffs with the puck that resulted in a turnover here or there for Kettles, but nothing that would make you think he’s incompetent, simply just the kind of mistake all young and developing defenders make. As someone whose fairly unfamiliar with the 2007-born Western Canada crop, seeing Peyton Kettles play was a treat.
