Listed at 6’5, 205lbs as a right-shot defenseman, Barnhill is an intriguing prospect. He skates well and is agile for his size allowing him to keep close gaps and put pressure on attacking forwards. Combined with a long stick makes him tough to beat. Barnhill is confident with the puck and can make simple, effective plays. I would like to see him play a tougher game and punish opposing forwards with his size. If he could learn to play the body more, it would make him a top USHL defender.

Barnhill doesn’t set the world on fire with his game but the big thing with him is growth potential. He has a great frame and moves really well for his size, covering a tonne of ground, especially when he gets into a full stride. He’s got some tools at his disposal with the puck and will occasionally slide to the top of the circles to present himself as a threat but felt that his could have been utilized more. His shot isn’t great but he was generating rebounds by getting pucks to the net and although not high skill, his passing ability throughout the zone, especially getting out of his own end, was effective and without hesitation. I think Barnhill is in that phase where he’s looking for an identity to carve out. Whether it be a lanky two way type or a guy who uses his size, reach and develops the bite to shore up his own zone first.

Another giant, mobile defender, Barnhill is yet another player that showcases some impressive potential over the next few seasons. He navigates the ice so easily, especially outside the offensive zone with a fluid stride that gets him all over the place seemingly all the time. There were some very impressive carries from Barnhill through the neutral zone, baiting opponents into committing to one route only to cross them up and look for other avenues up the ice. Using his size and range he was largely a very effective player in that area, moving the puck effectively while also monitoring his area of the ice, patrolling the sheet with ease, patience and awareness. He isn’t the most productive offensive player with his home club and you can see why, with a few weak shots flipped over the net from the point and some wrist shots that ended up in the corner of the offensive zone more often than you’d like, but he’s still a very raw player that shows so many interesting traits that grew on me all game long.

I really liked what Sean Barnhill brought in transition. He had a great eye for long passes to the weak-side of the ice, creating multiple controlled OZ entries. He brought pace to the Rocky Mountain counter attack as he was instantly looking for ways to advance the puck as soon as he resecured possession. Alongside that, Barnhill looked to be one of the team’s key creators along the blue line. He was comfortable pinching up and playing with the puck, trying to evade pressure with his reach and footwork as he worked down the OZ funnel. His instincts were mostly good here, but what errors were made came from a lack of separation on some of these turns.

This highly regarded Northeastern commit came exactly as advertised. His 6’4 frame gave oncoming forecheckers fits trying to enter the zone with his active stick. Even with his size, he is as mobile as a player that’s 5’9, he kept up pace with the attackers and made good defensive zone reads in his own end. He made crisp first passes to break out of his own end. He was very smart with his pinches, one which led to a goal. He started the play by pinching at the blue line using that active stick to force a turnover before getting back into position on his right point and taking a pass and getting a low shot through traffic which was redirected into the net. Barnhill also got a goal of his own, he waited on the powerplay to get space before calling for a quick pass which he one timed home from the top of the umbrella.

Kicking off our reports for Day 3 is Sean Barnhill from the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes. Barnhill was very poised in all situations and showed off some good athleticism to counter defensive situations and handle situations through some good explosiveness and speed. He makes good reads when defending the rush to make timely moves on the puck carrier, leaping at them with a strong forward stride timed with an accurate stick check, he either knocked the puck of their stick or forced them to make a play. He was able to stick with his man off the rush thanks to some good edges, he can stop and start rather quickly, allowing him to keep pace with shifty puck carriers who attempt to use twists and turns to shake him off. Coming out of his own end he made some strong breakout passes, whether it be a stretch pass to the neutral zone, or a quick heads-up pass to a man along the half-wall. Some good vision and passing talent helped him get the puck out of his own end. In the offensive zone he had a couple opportunities to fire the puck, in which he showed off a quick release with some decent power. He showed more flare in the first game of Day 3 opposed to the second, but a strong Day 3 for Barnhill nonetheless.
