It’s been an interesting season for Sharp this year, making the American Hlinka roster and having a relatively okay performance relative to the other defenders before heading into a bit of an up and down season for the Sioux Falls Stampede. Offensive production hasn’t been an inherent strong suit in his game so far, but the tools to change that are all present, specifically his lateral mobility in small areas, and are slowly being integrated into his OZ play more and more as the season progresses. This development showed progress when Sharp scored at the BioSteel game, specifically recognizing valuable offensive space and knowing how long to stay in it. The dying seconds of a 4-on-4 found Sharp on a rush with a linemate that got a dangerous scoring chance before being engaged in the boards deep in the OZ, fighting for possession while looking for a reset pass back to the blue line. After successfully securing team possession of the puck, Sharp lurks at the half-wall waiting to see how play develops before crashing the net and scoring the fourth goal of the game for Team Blue. While the goal itself isn’t very dependable as it was the result of conditions not often found in the average hockey shift, it was a nice tally to add to a player who’s production may not be fully indicative to the value he provides a team. One criticism that can be addressed is Sharp’s propensity for chasing attackers too far away from the slot and leaving open passing lanes behind. It’s something that’s been cut down as the season progresses, but Sharp’s defensive presence can really grow if he becomes a bit more in tune with defensive rotations, better understanding when to fully commit to a defensive challenge and when to back off and target more dangerous scoring options left open in the defensive zone.
