Earlier in the tournament, Smith earned some attention for having above average lateral movement in transition. The strength in his lower body gives him the ability to move from side to side, keeping his body square in the direction that he’s heading while maintaining secure possession of the puck. Smith reinforced these skills in this game, leveraging them for a 1-on-1 goal in the second period. Smith effectively used the defender as a screen, shifting to the side for an ideal angle with the goalie and defender, then released his shot with pinpoint accuracy and a good amount of power.

Game Information
2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - Red vs Royal Blue
Another player for Team Red who seemed to always be involved was Ryan Smith. The former Buffalo Jr. Sabre has developed physically over the last couple of years and continues to show great playmaking tendencies. He moves the puck deliberately with power after carefully evaluating his options and always playing with his head up. Finding him a quality goal-scoring player, not unlike Griffin Erdman to play with consistently is a recipe for success.
