Puck Preps
Regional Scout- USA
Minella was one of the more effective and productive defenders throughout the entire event, finishing with 7 points in 4 games and driving play in the right direction for Mid-Fairfield whenever he stepped over the boards. He was a catalyst in his team's transition game, starting in his own zone where he was highly effective on DZ retrievals, demonstrating strong scanning habits and executing controlled exits with accurate outlets or with his feet at a high rate. He was also a highly aggressive rush defender, combining anticipatory habits and lateral mobility to jump passing lanes and close in quickly on puck-carriers to deny zone entries. Minella had some really strong moments with the puck at the top of the offensive zone, flashing poise and vision to hold onto possession under pressure and execute downhill seam passes that found their way through traffic to generate high-danger chances down low. Off-puck he was consistently activating both in-zone and off the rush, demonstrating a shrewd knack of when to jump into space, which allotted him puck touches in prime scoring areas.

Minella is a smart defender with good physical tools and a smooth skating stride that allows him to make plays at both ends of the rink. His length and strong defensive stick allow him to cover a lot of space in the defensive zone and close out on opposing puck carriers rather quickly and when you throw in his skating ability, he becomes an effective rush defender as well with great lateral mobility to stay in front of attackers as they traverse past the blue line. His offence seemed to mostly stem from timely rushes up the ice when he was given open space with the ability to quickly connect with open teammates in the middle of the offensive zone when patrolling the perimeter with the puck. His toolkit made him noticeable along the offensive blue line as well as he was able to slide across the line so easily and use his vision to make smart reads with the puck whether that was letting off a quick shot to the net or sliding it over to a teammate.

Another defenseman from the Young Kings team who was very noticeable throughout our viewings, Cameron Minella was just another reason why his team went as far as they did at this event. Minella is a well-rounded defenseman who uses his skillset to be effective in both the offensive and defensive zone with a very smooth stride and lateral movements that allow him to confidently defend rush opportunities or carry the puck through the neutral zone with the shiftiness to shake defenders along the vision and passing ability to be able to make quick reads with the puck, spot open teammates cutting in behind defenders and most importantly showing he’s able to sift pucks through opponents and hit his targets. It’s very impressive to see him maneuver the blue line especially using all his tools as he has a great sense of when to send the puck quickly to a safe area, to activate and use his footwork to beat pressure, or to walk the line and scan the ice for options making him such a reliable option on the ice thanks to his smart decision-making and complete skillset.

Smooth skating Mid Fairfield Rangers defenseman Cameron Minella delivered an impressive performance at Nationals through his solid play on both ends of the ice. He is such a fluid skater with seamless yet powerful crossovers that allowed him to shadow forwards and keep them to the outside on zone entries as well as breaking up rush chances at a high rate. In the offensive zone, he was able to side-step pressure at the blue line using a combination of slick footwork and quick hands and was not hesitant to circle down low or attack any open space in the middle of ice after beating his man at the point. When he walked the line, he excelled at getting his shot through traffic and to the net whether it was from a quick snapshot to catch players off guard or through head and body fakes to create the lanes himself. He kept his puck touches quick and simple to effectively get the puck up the ice and overall, was a player who stood out game after game for Mid Fairfield who made it all the way to the semis.

Minella was the most effective player in this game from start to finish, killing the Jr. Mounties attack consistently and tilting the ice in his teams’ favour whenever he was out on the ice. He was assertive and aggressive while defending in the neutral zone, often anticipating and jumping into seams that broke up transition passes and initiate counterattacks. His lateral mobility allowed him to close in on puck-carriers while defending the rush, maintaining a strong gap at the defensive blueline and denying controlled zone entries. Some of his best work came on DZ retrievals where he was able to deal with contact while catching pucks on both his forehand and backhand before executing outlets to his wingers that lead to exits with control. He had some strong moments with the puck on his stick at the point as well, utilizing his mobility to evade pressure at the line and spot downhill passing options that lead to dangerous scoring chances.

Minella continued his impressive play at this year’s nationals with another solid game at both ends of the ice. He was garnering quality shot attempts by activating down from the blue line and was also making heads up plays while patrolling the point, showing great composure to quickly analyze the situation and make the right read with the puck within a split second. He made a few key defensive plays as well, combining his mobility with his strong defensive stick to get a piece of his opponents shot attempts or interrupt cycle plays down low.

From start to finish in this one Minella was commanding play from the backend using his four-way mobility and intelligent offensive activations. He got a plethora of looks early on in the game by reading and reacting well off his defense partner, pinching down from the line and getting a shot off from down low. With the puck on his stick from the point he was flashing immense confidence and vision, which allowed him to beat primary pressure multiple times and also execute downhill passes through traffic to the low slot. Minella also had some flashy puck rushes up the ice where he was able to skate the puck out of his own zone, weave around traffic in the neutral zone utilizing his edgework and puck skills before gaining the offensive zone with control. He finished the game with two primary assists, one of them coming on the powerplay where he made a great heads up pass from the top of the zone that was deflected in from the low slot.

Minella is a skater who often manages to bring a steadying presence on both ends of the ice and it was no different in this game. He made strong retrievals plays early on in the game, evading forecheckers using his legs and sending pucks towards the safe areas of the defensive zone where he knew he had teammates waiting. I thought some of his best moments in this one came at the offensive blue line, as he consistently made smart reads with the puck while under pressure whether that was finding his teammate alone on the backdoor with a long seam pass, firing shots towards the net through screens, or simply putting the back down deep for his teammates with his most impactful play being the game-tying goal with 11 seconds left after he rifled a puck clean into the back of the net after receiving the puck at the top of the zone.

In a game that was bogged down by a lot of quality defensive stops and keeping players to the exterior, Cameron was one who excelled at that. He came alive a bit and showed his offensive upside on the PP in the 2nd period though as he was able to fake shot in motion on the right side and draw that defensive coverage over enough to open up shooting space in the middle with timed slip passes. I like that he knows how to wait that extra second and delay for teammates. His touch passes were simple and slick, showed quality readiness and explosion while defending the rush, and squashed a number of rush chances really easily. It was honestly just a solid two-way game for him. I liked his play the more I watched for him.

Being such a smooth skater, it was easy to notice Minella early in this game with his ability to move so fluidly along the blue line with the puck. He read the ice well which enabled him to make some quick decisions at the blue line and he eventually opened the scoring in this one when he shot a quick wrister from the point that made its way through traffic and over the goalie’s shoulder. He entered the zone with a lot of speed when carrying the puck and when he had control of it, used a wide stance to protect the puck from opponents and attacked the middle of the ice when a lane presented itself. He was quick to get shots off before stick checks by pulling the puck into his body and shifting his weight from one leg to the other. He used smooth crossovers to keep forwards in front of him while defending the rush and to recover when he pinched too much into the offensive zone.
