Game Information
2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - Red vs Forest Green
The advanced technical skating and footwork that Griffin Erdman displayed in this game is something that is as refined by very few players at this stage of development. I’m often very impressed by his ability to rapidly sidestep, cross-cut, pivot, shuffle or any combination of them into positions where he can catch opponents off guard. His balance and gentle, yet secure puck handling help him to quickly turn opposition possessions into favorable opportunities for himself or his line-mates. On a particular play early in the game Erdman displayed excellent skill and footwork off of an offensive zone draw to fish a puck out from behind the net and seamlessly step his way into the crease for a quick scoring opportunity. While there are many players who might appear to have a similar archetype to Erdman, there are few who apply themselves with the same level of detail when playing without the puck. Particularly in this game I found that Erdman used his speed and agility equally well when playing whiteout the puck in order to pester opponents and create turnovers, as he did with the puck.

Game Information
2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - Red vs Royal Blue
Griffin Erdman’s quick reaction time while playing without the puck is one of the key elements that makes him a relatively impactful player without the puck. On Team Red’s second goal of the game it was his shrewd defensive zone awareness that enabled him to efficiently turn a turnover in congestion into an odd-man rush, forcing Team Royal Blue quickly onto their heels. Throughout the rush, Erdman remained available to his line-mates as an outlet before finally forcing the puck out to the Joe Connor in the slot. To open the 2nd period, Erdman slipped behind the Royal Blue defenders to pick up a cheeky chip pass from Joe Conner, before reigning up onto his own heels and pulling the puck to the backhand. The combination of puck skill and timely awareness resulted in a highlight-reel goal.
