I thought Gouchie played a tad bit too conservative for my liking at this event, but his strong in his own end and mature style of play were good enough to earn him a spot on this list. He was using his large frame very effectively in the defensive zone to pin attackers along the boards and disrupt cycle plays in the process. He keeps his feet moving while defending along the perimeter as well, which allowed him to stick with opposing forwards on the outside and stymie most attempts to get to the interior of the ice. From the offensive blueline he was using his powerful point shot to get pucks through traffic and on net, causing chaos in the crease and a few chances from in tight. He can still be a little stationary while defending the rush which can make it tough for him to defend against speedier attackers; although this is just one of the few flaws of one of the more projectable defenders in this year’s class.

Gouchie was a very strong physical presence on the ice who consistently came out of board battles with the puck by fending off forecheckers using his big 6’1 frame to separate the puck from his opponents and being strong on his stick. I also thought he defended the rush well; he was able to stay in front of his opponents and keep a tight gap while forcing them to the outside before closing them off along the boards. With the puck in his own end, he made smart plays by keeping his head up, looking for open teammates and not forcing passes into high traffic areas. He played a very simple and reliable defensive game, one that we’ve seen all season long from the Moncton defenseman.

It took a while for Gouchie to get going in this contest, but once he did, I thought he was one of the Flyers better defenders. His rush defending seemed improved from the beginning of the year, as he was keeping his feet moving and pushing attackers to the outside for low percentage shots. He was flashing some puck-carrying skill through the neutral zone, taking the space that was offered to him and making deft maneuvers with the puck to beat defenders and gain the offensive blueline. His shot is an absolute weapon from the point, where he fires low, hard and accurate shots that find their way to the net and create chances in front.

I didn’t think this was Gouchie’s best performance of the year, as he seemed to be playing a bit tentatively and was overhandling pucks from the get-go. His puck-moving wasn’t nearly as crisp as I’ve seen from previous viewings, as he was forcing pucks into congested areas and sometimes missing open targets on his outlets. His offensive contributions mostly consisted of blasting shots from the point, which did create some rebound opportunities from time to time. I still liked the way he was dealing with pressure on defensive zone retrievals, using his large frame to box out forecheckers and buy time for himself to spot breakout options.
